Update 48: The Discount Animation Update

    Another day, another complaint about the new animations.

    ZoS i am begging you to acknowledge the issue, ESPECIALLY considering the official wording of "virtually undistinguishable."
    Not only that is completely false, but the new stances are so wrong that they feel like unfinished files that made into live.

    I had just began another zone story, but this change literally sucked out my will to play.

    Can you guess what weapon I'm holding? That's right! It's dual wield Iceshard maces!

    I have Iceshard ice staff on my back bar, and swapping to front bar keeps me in the ice staff stance, but makes my Iceshard maces invisible. Glad that the weapon style I spent hard earned money on 2 years ago is now broken thanks to an update that had 0 internal testing and pushed out with hundreds of known bugs, completely making the purchase worthless. Am I supposed to expect some form of compensation? I don't know. It's like the whole grim focus perma glow again.

    It's time to roll back this update and abandon it. It has made combat feel terrible, so many things no longer have animations (remember when your character would do an animation when taking the purify synergy? I remember it like it was just last month), and it's only making people upset. It's time to sit down and have a real, company wide discussion about abandoning 12 year old consoles. In no future will the game continue to be profitable if it keeps being broken to support outdated hardware.

    Can you guys possibly find out why the devs are actively taking away from the game to keep running on older/weaker devices? It's like that saying about banning adults from eating steak because babies can't chew it; constantly degrading the game to stay running on older/weaker consoles and computers is taking things from everyone else. AwA was done because the game needed more space, we've been told new things like Classes or Housing slots would take too much memory or whatever it was for older machines, now hundreds of animations have been changed.

    How much more is going to be taken to keep accommodating older or less powerful machines? How much is going to be kept from being added for them? There has to be a point where increasing minimum specs comes because it's just becoming more and more detrimental to everyone else.

    Now the assassin personality is broken like the thief personality where it defaults to the standard animation unless you toggle it off and back on.

    We updated over 900 animation files in order to support this effort, including animations that are used outside of player combat. We have gotten many fantastic reports of animation issues from players on PTS, but tracking down reproductions of these issues and the appropriate fixes on our internal realms takes time.

    Maybe edit only a few of the most used weapons and a cosmetic or 2 so as an easier to revert if needed test run?

    Most used means more inconvenient if it breaks but you'll also know sooner when it does. And less overall edits means less wondering what fix broke what, and should mean a faster fix.

    Does this really need saying???

    And say what was specifically edited in the patch notes so we know what to watch for.

    I have an XBox Live account (for playing multiplayer Grounded) and I have never owned a console (or used a controller) in my life.

    This account comes with windows boxes now. I have one that I never even take.
    ZOS really needs to move forward with the baseline if they have any intention of keeping this thing running.

    Combat feels weird now too, i dont know how to explain it but the movements feel jittery, weaving bugs out a lot and sometimes the character just refuses to keep up with my button presses

    Thank god that Writhing Wall is over, i really hope this is the first thing addressed

    Just fought B'Korgen for the Summerset daily and instead of doing the headache animation your character just walks back in slomo.

    I just noticed how many frames are missing from the backwards hand movement in the Healthy Offering cast. It almost seems like some other frames were duplicated to fill the full duration of the animation. It looks like the character either suffers from severe gout or he activated janky bullet time.

    I want to come back to this thread for a second.

    We were told that the point of reducing the frames in these animations was to conserve memory "to ensure that future features will run on every supported platform."

    And yet... the new Moons over Orsinium crates come with 2 custom actions, 2 skill styles (one of which decently changes the animation), a polymorph with a unique equip animation, 4 unique new emotes, and a memento.

    While emotes and the like can be fun, it does beg the question of if those animations are affecting storage space in the same way that combat animations are. And then by extension, are the additions of things like more emotes and mementos actively preventing the teams to add things like new skill lines or Classes?

    Also, are there possibly any performance issues from these? We already know mementos are turned off in Cyrodiil, but is there a chance that adding loads more emotes could be adversely affecting performance? I do love emotes and taking screenshots, but even I wouldn't notice if half of them disappeared overnight since there are so many at this point, and the idea that the team would eschew combat look and feel and new combat content in favor of letting our characters dance in a certain way for two days before we forget about that emote doesn't feel good.

    That's probably was the reason for butchering skill animations. They will destroy anything just for the cause to add new items behind paywall.

    My major problem with it is still how our characters tilt and bend while receiving hits, it breaks 1st person animations and you can't even visualize what you're casting, and it also looks goofy. :lol:

    The weapon drawn idles look awkward and unnatural. Standing with the destruction staff drawn makes my character look like a crab: her legs are too far apart and are bent in an unnatural way. It looks weird, and you never quite shake the feeling that something is off about the way they stand.

    If ZOS has reduced combat animation quality to make room for the memory requirements of purchased animations, then obviously as responsible Tamrielites, we should never again purchase any mounts, emotes or other customisations with new animations. To, you know, aid ZOS in saving memory.

    Exactly. Having good combat animation is essential, I don't know what ZOS is thinking by reducing the quality of something so crucial.

    Even barswap feels extra bad now, and that shouldn't have anything to do with it, I think?
    Theres an addon called Instaswap that I used before, that says it disables barswap anim completely, but it doesn't seem to work anymore. The responsiveness i assume was the addon is gone now.
    If zos did change the barswap anim, they could just get rid of it instead. An Actual performance improvement.

    Don't know if it was mentioned by anyone else in this thread yet. Aside from all the other horrible animations that are very well known and obvious; some other less so:

    -Pummeling Goliath has no animation at all. You just stand idle while bashing.

    -The dodge roll sway motion when you do a perfectly timed dodge has been removed.

    And the aura memento cast animation makes my character look like she is twisting her ankle in a horrible way.

    @Lord_Hev Yeah, I have a thread up for that (it's in the main post of this thread). @ZOS_kevin asked for a video, which someone provided. It really sucks a lot of the fun out of playing the necromancer class.

    As for the cool dodge animation; yet another loss with Update 48. Thanks for adding it to the pile :s

    A lot of the bosses right before they heavy attack (with a 2h weapons) turn their back to you at the very last second after this update.

    Very confusing for tanks, it makes you think you lost taunt.

    That's a classic lol. Flying cats have been a thing for years. Had a normal recently where the ice dragon got stuck in the sky and wouldn't land. We all had to jump off the side and die to reset it. Another one i was told has been around awhile

    ESO feels downgraded. The strange stances and jittery disconnected combat just feels crazy. So odd the devs have let combat get like this...Players are skipping in Craglorn. Jittery animation and invisible abilities. Hope they lower the price soon...
