Playing on PC with a gamepad.

PathosDante
I’ve been playing with a keyboard and mouse for many years, but using a gamepad has always felt more fun to me.

However, when I played the game with a gamepad, I felt as if I were playing it for the first time.

Do you think getting used to playing with a gamepad would be an advantage in PvE or PvP content, or is the keyboard and mouse setup still stronger?

In my experience, combat is a lot easier with mouse and keyboard. Skills feel more responsive using m/k. But it could vary by person.

(lockpicking is also easier using m/k, and many of the UI addons I've tried only work with m/k. On PC, you can actually use both at the same time, if you use the setting to do that.)

I've used x-padder since day one. I don't like the native gamepad controls or its UI It's never felt right to me.

I guess it depends on what you are used to. I moved from PC to console many years ago because I couldn't get the hang of kb/m on the original AC title. When I moved from console back to PC after 7 years of playing ESO on controller, I still couldn't get the hang of kb/m. 4 years later, I still use a 'pro' PlayStation controller, for most fights, because it's my muscle memory.

A wireless controller is much easier on the hands and wrist for me. It did take some time to get used to the standard Xbox One controllers, around a year or so ago I switched to a Flydigi Vader 3 Pro and it is amazing. You get 6 extra buttons all of which can be mapped to any controller or keyboard buttons. I think the newer model the 4 is rather cheap currently too, I think I paid around $60-70 for mine but I saw it around $50 I think. Battery life is decent and the type C plug in charges it back to full rather quickly compared to the Xbox batteries.

I use a combination of keyboard/mouse and mostly controller. I hot key UI toggle to the num pad keys and use KB&M for inventory management and some addon functions since addons don't all fully support console UI... yet.

It mostly comes to preference. There are different game types where some controls have an advantage. For example in fps games k&m is unparallel. And at least for me, in driving games a controller is easier - largely due to the throttle being a slider and not on/off. Some games are designed for some specific controls, like Biomutant is designed for a controller. But outside of those, it's just what you are used to.

Even in games that are designed for some specific control method, it doesn't necessarily mean that method of control is better. I played Horizon: Zero Dawn on PS4 so I got used to the controller. But when Forbidden West came to PC I first started it on a controller, because as a PS game it is optimised for a controller. However, I quickly learned (by mistake -- forgot to take out my controller one day) that k&m works just as well and, in fact, better for me.

Since ESO is not an fps, not a driving game and not designed for any specific control method, I would say play with whatever you feel most comfortable.

I’ve been using a gamepad since I learned they added gamepad support to PC in like 2016. It’s much easier on the wrists, and it’s still rather reactive. I’d recommend getting a gamepad with back paddles if you find yourself wanting to do the claw grip. And remember!! You can always change the keybinds on the controller. I changed mine to be more like Skyrim’s gamepad controls.

I started ESO on PlayStation and moved to PC, took the gamepad with me.

I don't feel disadvantaged in any way, but I've never played with mouse + keyboard.

I tried playing a bit with my gamepad, but even switching bars was hard for me, so I’ll stick with keyboard and mouse :disappointed:
