Can we talk about warden charm (again)

Sick of this skill, it’s so obnoxious and broken. It’s buggy, it causes you to phase through the map and keep walls, it’s difficult to break free from and it’s practically everywhere, you're guaranteed to be charmed on immunity cool-down.

Arcanist mastery was nerfed to the ground for “over performing” and yet we have this which is so over powered it’s being used by 99.9% of DDs. You look at the guild rosters and it’s all Wardens. I wonder why

The interaction between Charm and ROA with Colossus is especially egregious. If you don't have Streak you're dead.

I wish we could just get one guy on the combat dev team with some passion and gumption to make this game great.

Sadly, that ship sailed long ago and I don't think there's any way off this downhill slide.

One of my group-mates got charmed underneath the map tonight by this. Fun times!

Yeah it’s pretty wild when everyone swapped to Warden right after Subclassing just to do this Class Mastery Script.

Personally though, I wouldn’t be bothered by Charm if it was blockable or dodgeable, or if other classes had access to an alternative, like when Mass Hysteria made people turn around and run away. It synergized so well with the backstab passives.

…Or if the radius of the Script wasn’t so massive, or if it was single target instead of an AoE.

Really, a lot of different ways to tackle this problem.

The truly "bang head against the wall" moment is Turn Evil used to cause the same problem. They altered Turn Evil so that there is no movement from those affected.

There were no cons to doing this. In PvP the pro was that this no longer happened. In PvE the pro was that it made Turn Evil a great skill for keeping mobs near-stacked. I use it in my tank build for collecting the little mobs.

I wonder if they just aren’t aware of how broken it is. The devs don’t frequent Cyrodiil and since it’s not used in PvE at all it’s fallen under the radar

    Doesn't feel like they care...

Why can't we have a little bit of fun? Instead of calling for nerfs please do yourself a favour, level up a Warden yourself and join the dark side!

You my friend have pretty much just summed up the problem with Cyrodiil

No my friend, the problem with Cyrodiil is that the grass is always greener on the other side. In the history of this game we had tons of unneeded nerfs just because people complained about some skills that had almost every single time some kind of counterplay, but most players were just not aware of how to counter them properly. So we lost some iconic / class defining skills like Dk Wings, Sorcerer Overload third bar, mist form, etc etc ultimately transforming what was a really fun rock / paper / scissor concept into a bland, boring and homogeneous playstyle. So whenever I see someone calling for nerfs, i say be careful with what you wish, because the excel sheet balancing approach that killed most of the fun in this game is what we have today, and this is the direct result of this kind of attitude. I play this game since day one and i played *every single class and spec*, both magical and stamina versions back in the day, I have 15 fully leveled up characters and, trust me, having played them all extensively I can say that this game back in the day was way, way more balanced than most people thought at the time, just because they didn't know the perspective of the other classes, having not played them, and judging class balance based on their (false) assumptions and lack of knowledge. I don't know if this is the case, but this is true most of the time generally speaking, so please stop calling for nerfs, any kind of nerfs, and start calling for buffs instead. Or please start playing the class that you think is OP, most of the times you will find that is way less OP than what you think.

@mandricus I share your sentiment... except when it comes to Warden Charm. I loathe most nerfs, to sets, skills, classes, abilities, etc. because it does reduce everyone to the lowest common denominator. I joked about this for months when Way of Fire became an optimal set in PVP. It wasn't because Way of Fire was changed, it was because so many other sets were gutted so Way of Fire became viable.

But Warden Charm is a nuisance. Its a skill that relies on group as much as it relies on lag. If there was zero lag, Charm is probably not a problem. But Cyrodiil IS lag, which makes Charm so no-fun to play against.

Did I go to the dark side and retool my Warden? You bet. It was fun for about 2 weeks. Now it makes me realize how good we had it when Sorcs were out of control, which was awful. :#

If I was a dev tasked with making an ultimate ability that focused on CC, that Script is what I would come up with. That’s how strong it is.

i've been tracking pvp for awhile now. i only participate if there's an event, even then it's kinda hit or miss with me. from what i've read here, on other forums and learned from others in game, pvp isn't really viable for entertainment.

After hundreds of reports many of these abilities still remain, ruining the experience we pay for...
and i ask this question sincerely and with respect.
why are you still paying for it?
You've had nature explained to you and you're bored with it, you've had the living body explained to you and you're bored with it, you've had the universe explained to you and you're bored with it, so now you want cheap thrills and, like, plenty of them....

What’s the counterplay you speak off? Dodge roll into the 20 other charm AOEs that are there waiting for you? Hope you have an immovable pot free on cooldown? You can’t block it, breaking free is hit and miss cause of how buggy it is, if you're charmed into a wall it’s game over and once you're charmed, you’re guaranteed to be charmed again once immunity is over cause every man and his dog is using this mastery.

In this case, I did as you said.

I swapped to my long unplayed Warden for several weeks, used Charm excessively, and it really is as (too) good as advertised. I especially noticed when I swapped back to my usual Templar or DK and no longer had it. It's superpowered in certain combos and it's a get-out-of-jail-free card if you tack it on your Burst Heal and hit it when you're in danger to melee.

I agree in general that calling for nerfs on anything and everything that is noticeable/different is the road to bland gaming, but Charm really is overperforming for a tacked-on Class Script, is extremely buggy, and has a strange interaction with breaking free to boot. It's very much definitive that the exact same ability has existed in other forms/names over the years and been nerfed/altered because it was deemed problematic and unhealthy for the game.

If you play mostly Warden or exclusively Ranged, maybe it's not as noticeable, but there's a reason this is thread #2930 calling for it to be changed.

There's also a reason so many small groups in Cyrodiil run it on the bulk of their players or are entirely comprised of Wardens right now.
