Siege Camps & Vitrified Souls: A Theory

Go to any PD or Delve or anywhere but a siege camp and Vitrified Souls will drop easily. Go to a Siege Camp and it becomes very much hit and miss - sometimes it's a flood and sometimes it's a drought. I have a theory based on my own observations.

My Theory:

1) Not every mob killed is lootable. The % of mobs at siege camps that can be lootable is hard to judge (given what I am about to lay out) but on my observations and typical behaviour I would estimate it is somewhere between a 25% - 50% chance that a killed mob will be lootable.
2) If YOU or a member of YOUR group get the killing blow, you will get loot privileges - if it satisfies 1. Now what consitutes the killing blow? Strictly speaking the last tick/hit that takes the mobs last health. The actual could be anywhere from the last 1 - 6 players to damage the mob which would be consistent with how loot privilege seems to work with overland mobs. Bosses seem to take a different approach being the highest 12 damage dealers, though this has altered over the years to include tanks and taunt.
3) If YOU heal someone not in your group, who then satisfies both 1 & 2 you will get loot privileges - again this would be consistent with how loot privilege seems to work with overland mobs.

I have consistently found that if I am throwing out an AoE HoT (due to the fire and forget as opposed to a standard one off heal) that actually heals rather than overheals then Vitrified Souls dropping from Siege Camps are a lot less hit and miss and the flood/drought becomes a steady stream.

If you come in early its lots of mobs to kill and it fills up fast, coming in at the end and you just have a few and the main boss.
Don't think its first hit or killing blow, just random. Got loot from the material quests like fat where I came in and did a acid spray and got loot.

One thing I noticed is that groups get an huge advantage, first you all share the kills, but you can also loot each other kills.
So If I kill a mob and get a soul from looting the body, my friend also get one and he get one from from looting my kill who is shared with me so its 2 in any case 4 if partner loot your kill.
With 3 in group its 9, if both loot. As most drops is two or more your done.

I don't think ist any special mechanism as it would require lots of work. it's just a lower chance of drop from mob here than overland. I say 1/6-10
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Which would be consistent with what I said about 1 - 6 being the last to damage get loot privledge as seen with overland mobs in general.

I've noticed that if I get to one of the soul reapers before most others and tag the mobs that spawn in, I'll get a lot of souls. If I get there later, even if I'm taking down mobs, I don't get anything.

So far, though, I've only ever had to do two camps to complete that quest. Most of the time I get all I need by doing one camp.

Yes you need two is late as not many mobs to kill

How are you tagging them? With a DoT?

I've shown up at the last few seconds and hit the final boss with a light attack and got loot rights makes zero sense.

And sometimes I see lootable corpses in the area that is far from where I was killing the mobs. I definitely was not involved in killing them but somehow I did get to loot them.

i've looted souls from corpses i hadn't attacked, rotating through the spawn points.

it's kind of random, but the killing blow theory also seems to hold.

    sometimes. :/

You don't need killing blows, just enough to "tag" enemies as lootable for you (I assume the top 12 players limit applies to each individual enemy). An AoE is fine the enemies will be alive for long enough. When I set down AoEs at multiple fight areas at a siege camp, I get enough souls to finish in one siege assault.

In my experience it depends on how many players there are, how much their DPS is, and whether you arrive early or late.

The ideal situation is getting there early and helping kill several of the mobs at two or more of the soul reapers, in which case I generally get plenty of lootable corpses and can usually collect 15 vitrified souls at a single camp.

But if I have to struggle (run around like crazy) trying to kill the mobs because I got there late or because the other players are melting through everything before I can get any hits, then I'll be lucky if I can collect 15 vitrified souls by defending 3 camps.

In the second scenario, I usually have more success by going to a base game zone and soloing a dolmen or two, assuming the zone's dolmens are some distance away from the wayshrines such that it isn't attractive to dolmen grinders.
I've fought mudcrabs more fearsome than me!

I think it's really just weird randomness. I've been the only one in a delve and got lots of souls, and then done subsequent rounds of the respawned mobs and boss, still alone, and got nothing.

I've found that my healers or characters doing a decent amount of it tend to get more souls than those doing pepega dps.

Feels pretty random to me, more random than usual overland stuff.

But yes, at siege camps the drop rates seem to be better, you can get the quest done usually within one camp as in delve you might go a long while before getting any drops.

the siege camps are nice to knock two things out at once but it often takes 2-3 camp turn ins to get one lens one. There is a cave near the southern camps that has decent drop rates. Also Norvalk ruins in Stormhaven was really quick for me. It has nothing but cold harbour daedra. I am guessing the public dungeon there in cold harbour is good too.

Which is why i'm suggesting killing blow rather than damage done.
