I think events like Writhing Wall are the completely wrong approach to ESOs survival

I hope it happens and is implemented in a way people find useful. But it's not going to save the game from being stale.

As for the topic at hand, I share the concerns that a one-time event like this risks wasting limited resources for little more than a temporary bump in population. But on the other hand, the events have grown really stale and boring for longer term players, and I'm pleased they're trying something different. I would hope that the writhing fortress area in particular, and perhaps some of the other efforts put into the event, can be reused or repurposed afterwards so as to add something longer-term to the game. It's been a very light year.

FOMO and new stuff build hype

FOMO over the last 5 years is how the game got into the state it is... among other reasons but those are the big ones.

Chasing trends and adding FOMO trying to force players to log in daily vs giving them rewarding content/a reason to log in daily doesn't keep people around.

I've lost track of the people who say ESO feels like a chore and they only log in to do xyz and then log off quickly. Thats what fomo gets you.

That shows that stuff like Golden Pursuits are the only reason people want to play these days. That does not make the Endeavors bad. It shows the content and balance are.

People are annoyed at how stale PvP is. The lack of PvE content. The poor balance. Those are the things that are causing the problem. FOMO is still doing a good job of getting the customer inside the door. But it can't be relied on to keep them there. You actually have to good underlying product for that. And right now, ESO has become too stagnant and imbalanced.

Changing up the events is a good start. But they need to also start making new stuff again. It was a bad idea to cut half a year of content from the jump. Despite that people had been complaining about stale events with no impact for ages. So, actually addressing a customer complaint with something new and interesting is a good thing.

I wouldn't lump this wall with golden pursuits or endeavors. I don't pay attention to either of those because they are just a list of things to do. They have no connection to a story. The wall thing seems like it will be fun, so long as I can completely the content before it first (which I started last night). It adds context and feels like world building.

I don't like the many events, dailies, endeavors, and golden pursuits. There is just too much low effort busywork with no connection to a story. Events might add a story the first time, but then you are just repeating the same low effort content year after year if you continue to take part.

Gamers are real people and real people get busy with work, family commitments, travel and sometimes need breaks from their games due to mental health issues or just gaming burnout. One time only events create a stressful FOMO (fear of missing out) trauma in some individuals that is long lasting. I use the word trauma lightly afcourse but the feeling of missing out and it's unfairness doesn't go away easily for those players that have dedicated years of play and money to the game.

The fact that the new content was a small island rather than two large maps as it has always been, was already a bad idea. Now to shove DLC Dungeons in the package to compensate, was preposterous.

That is the primary reason why I didn't buy the pass. I already pay for a subscription and thus have access to the dungeon DLC (which I have no use for anyway), why would I pay for them again as part of the content pass?

Compared to previous years, it seems extremely small and not really worth the amount of money they charge for it.

Yeah I hear ya on this one. I might take a gander at it but I've got way too much going on now to really care about it.

Those people maybe need more exposure to disappointments like this if they are that fragile. They need to build more resilience. Because what you are describing is not a healthy way to be.

The events are a big reason I've bailed on the game for 11 of 12 months each year. They are really disappointing filler and seems like a trend toward a game I wasn't interested in. Then again, I also can't stand the many dailies and anything that tries to push people to repeat content for prizes. The only time I consider that palatable game design is (1) dungeon achievements for things like no death or (2) all-time trial leaderboards. I also despise using random gear drops to get people to repeat content. Obviously, I'm not much of an MMO guy, but I have mostly loved ESO so long as I took breaks.
