"I bet you could spare a coin"

Yes, Fruvar, I could. In fact, I have a surplus of coins that I would gladly share with you. Alas, the All-Maker has unfairly, and cruelly, decided that I can not and that you must remain forever destitute.

(Please let us give to the poor. I know that there are some we can, but there are so many in Tamriel who cry out to us and we can do nothing for them)

You know, you can consider that you give gold to the poor without doing so. It's a RPG, after all. If I wanna play a philantropist, bam ! I just say I play one.
I mean, I don't really think it would make a difference.

If you can't "give the gold in your head" without loosing yours, for immersion reasons, you can buy stuff and destroy it.

Yes, I'm well aware that I can imagine whatever I choose.

My point, which maybe I should have spelt out more clearly instead of wrapping it in a little RP, is that ZOS goes to the trouble to not only place these npcs in the world, but also give them voice acted dialogue. Yet, they don't allow us to interact with them in the world other than pick pocketing or murder.

I think it would be nice if we could interact with a little kindness, instead of the cruelty of robbing or murdering the poor.

LOL'ing just a bit because I've been there... sure, I can spare some gold, but the all-knowing devs not only made you destitute, but non-interactable. Bites to be you, buddy, and there's nothing I can do about it. 'Course there is the opposite problem of making them interactable, letting players give them 5g or whatever, and then they're still there 10 years and however many millions of players later talking about how poor they are.
I'm fresh out of outrage, but I could muster up some amused annoyance if required.

Yeah, I know, and I get it. It would still feel a little better, and less awful, to be able to do something in the moment.

Yes I strongly agree with you.
There is a part of an event in ghratwood where we talk to a quest giver and he gives us the option to donate gold to the poor orphans and he takes our gold. So it is doable but I'm not sure if the devs would take the time and go back and add the option for beggars to take our gold. I imagine zos is too busy with other things to worry about that. There is a beggar that sleeps outside the thief's outlaws refuge in Hews bane and I've always wanted to give him gold or a small house..I have so many unused lil houses he could have.

    I still don't get it

Either you are invested in role playing (I am, too, so I totally get that) and you can just simulate all this in your head.
Or you are not, and there is no point in giving gold to a NPC, that will stays the same no matter how many times you personnaly give 5 gold to him.

I believe that any resources spent coding that, no matter how meager they are, would be better spent elsewhere.

Really, It's a false good idea.

Those people make millions of gold that way, and are in no way poor. They just scam off people's heartstrings, which it's an rpg roleplay whatever you want, but just saying as in irl, be careful who you fall victim to.

The point of a videogame is to not have to simulate in your head, but instead to enact and interact with a fictional world.

Absolutely agree! I can rob them, even kill them so having the option to give them some gold makes sense.

Considering they're all killable, which means some player somewhere will inevitably murder them every day, the explanation could be that they spend all the money from players on hospital fees and return to poverty.
