Mammoth

I was disappointed but unsurprised to see that the Mammoth mount will be a crown store item.
I had hoped it, along with the giant style outfit, would be golden pursuit rewards.
It would have been nice to introduce a new type of mount to the game in a way we could actually earn rather than buy.

I'm grateful it is not a crown gem exclusive or a crown crate item. Curious about what price it will have in crowns...

At least if it was a crown crate item it would be buyable with Seals of Endeavour. Options are good.

You have no concept of how happy a friend is about this mount. They would have jumped through whatever hoops required to have this mount.

They have wanted a mammoth mount for *years* and there will be no stopping them celebrating.

I assume at some point there will be golden pursuits that have a reskin for this mount type. I will probably wait. I want to test out new types before buying.

I already hate this mammoth. It’s too big, too loud, and blocks everyone’s view. I’m afraid it will cover everything in the crafting area.

No idea who came up with the weird idea to put something like this into the world.

At least it doesn’t have any unnecessary bling.

There's already too much crown store exclusives, so that shouldn’t be the starting point for anything. If people aren't engaging content or expressing a lack of rewards, there should be a much better effort to make sure the new shinies are earnable. I realize we have events, but that's not always what people are looking for. People like myself are looking for something in the rest of the content. The game's monetized enough, IMO.

I mean, is it really a surprise at all at this point?

I'll give credit to ZoS for including a few things into Golden Pursuits like the Scribing Altar, but after seeing the very first combat-pet skins and fire Volley skin being exclusively cash and/or gamble-only, we all should know better by now. ZoS has always had a deplorable marketing team with the morals of a chainsaw.

I hate to be that person, but the Mammoth is a perfect example of something that should be sold in the Crown store. It’s flashy (in a “this is unique” way, not a disco-horse way like your Crown Crate mounts), it’s strictly cosmetic, it’s got all unique animations for everything (including swimming).

The fact that a lot of people want it means it will sell. I’m honestly expecting 5000 Crowns here, and I’d be surprised if it’s less than 4000.

I know “monetization” is a dirty word nowadays, but facing facts - video game prices have been around $60 since the 90s. That’s like the one thing that inflation doesn’t really touch. And yet budgets required for servers and graphics and so many more developers put them around what’s required for Hollywood blockbusters.

Now ZOS has talked about ESO making like $2B before. That’s gross - it doesn’t consider their expenses. But we do know that mathematically the amount of content has been going down, and every year there are more people disgruntled with buying another Chapter, so I’m sure ZOS’s current income is not what it was even two years ago. Even the last two years worth of “special Chapter feature” are both free with basegame now.

Point is: ESO can’t survive on progressively weaker stories alone, especially since Solstice was fighting against Oblivion’s remake and whatever is coming up next year is going to have to be up against GTA6. Cosmetic microtransactions, however you feel about them, are the best thing ZOS could do to try to keep ESO alive, because then they’re still getting income even from the people who are fed up with the stories and questing.

Sure, they should have earnable rewards, and they do! We have loads of earnable skill styles, and there’s been a zone-earnable mount and outfit style (and trial trifecta mount) every year since Necrom.
But of course the better quality ones are going to be for sale; that’s not greed, that’s just business. And that also means you can choose if it’s worth it - I saw the red Twilight skill style and I saved my money since I don’t run pets on my sorc… but my Warden is a Skaal so you bet I’m buying that polar bear the second it’s available.

Be careful what you ask for. It's probably going to be a bright celestial themed mammoth with pink nebula styled butterfly wings and golden lightning striking around it every second. And it will wear colour changing earrings.

I think the mammoth is cute, but I'm not looking forward to them blocking the view in crowded area's.

Especially not if in the future we will get (radiant) apex mammoths like the horror I described.

Wouldn’t be a better strategy to keep ESO alive making better stories and zones again? Instead of asking the same as a ‘year pass’ with a chapter and 4 dungeons that is the same price for 1 cosmetic. That does not make sense.

Yes, actually. It would be an incredible idea (and do wonders for sales) if they came out next year with a story as good as Orsinium, and as much content as we had for Morrowind (a whole new PvP mode, a whole new Class, a large zone with multi-part side quests and excellently written characters, and everything else that entailed).
But, as you said, they just lost a large portion of the team. It seems unlikely that they'd be able to manage that much again, especially considering how we've already been getting less and less every year.

So what, the answer is... for the few remaining developers to just give away one of the few cards that they have left in their hand for free? I fail to see how that's going to help them either. Sure, the players will be happy and able to ride their mammoth into the sunset... as daddy Microsoft pulls the plug on the entire game for being unprofitable.

Yes, microtransactions are the "lazy" way to make money. In a perfect world, the stories would be so good that they'd sell themselves, we wouldn't need to buy any cosmetics because they'd all be included in the game, the DLC would all be included in ESO+ and we would all want to sub because it's all incredible. However, it's not a perfect world. So if people are cancelling subs, Chapter sales are way down, and then the Store is closed... how exactly does ZOS get the money to keep the servers on?

I'll admit, I'm much more okay with monetization than most people since I can see the difference between luxury items and necessities - even in the real world, we don't go into the grocery store and demand bottles of Dom Perignon for free since "bubbly wine is cool!" I also know that ESO items are ridiculously overpriced, but I do not buy Crowns at full price since that is too expensive for my blood; the sub Crowns are very much worth it since I'd pay the sub anyway and when I do buy Crowns, I buy them only when they're on sale (and I'm sure that some suit is going to stop that at some point too when they notice most people stock up for the sales - I can't help but notice that Crowns are not included in the QuakeCon sale article this year...)

What I'm not okay with in terms of monetization is gamble boxes. If there's some cosmetic I want to buy, I want to be able to see a price and buy it. I do not like the idea of just tossing money in on the chance that I'll get what I want (or, what the suits want, for us to just toss in infinite money). I prioritize doing Endeavors every day because I want to be able to buy things if I want them instead of just tossing money in a black hole. So at the very least I'm happy that the Mammoth is going to be for direct sale and not relegated to being an Apex mount in some random Crate season.

Crown Store items are usually quite plain, but the same model will be re-used within crates to be a flashy one.

    Shame they aren't multi-rider.
Imagine a herd of Mammoths tromping across Cyrodiil, with 4 riders on their backs. All steaming towards the next keep.
You could have a magical Mammoth Mystery Tour.
They could increase in size the more riders they have. Like horses do when the rider has a large figure polymorph.
    Marvellous :)

The fact that a lot of people want it means it will sell. I’m honestly expecting 5000 Crowns here, and I’d be surprised if it’s less than 4000.

I don't see how or why it should be more expensive than other mounts when it isn't even a multi-rider mount. (Multi-rider are the only ones to have cost 5,000 Crowns.)

*Dwarven Spiders and *Heavyweights tend to average between 3,000—4,000 Crowns with some being even less. (Counting direct Crown purchases not Gem exclusives.)

    * I chose to point out these two specifically as they were entirely new models being introduced at their times and not just a "new" mount using a preexisting base being slightly modified like Elks(horse), Indriks(horse), Ornaugs(senche), Durzogs(wolf), Nix-Ox(Dwarven Spider) etc.

The most expensive mount to this day, again NOT counting Gem Exclusive mounts, I believe is still the Great Elk at 4,500 Crowns. They've never gone up to 4,500 again since when it comes to single rider mounts. (I remember the backlash over the price and remember being pelted with mud balls because I'd bought it for myself.)

    /rant

Edited to add: I personally think if they'd waited another year to release it the mammoth would've been a great Golden Purisuit for say celebrating Skyrim's 15th Anniversary. Along with like a costume, a shout emote or memento, and like a mini Alduin dragon imp pet and such.
