"The Many Paths" quest bug

Near the end of this quest in West weald, you need to interact with a device multiple times, but one of the interactions (close valve to reduce heat) is bugged and does nothing.

This is an old bug, I found several posts about it but none with a solution. I already abandoned the quest once and did it again and it's still bugged.

Anyone have any ideas or tricks to progress this broken quest?

I had anissue where at one point I was targeting/activating the wrong valve, and another point where it just took a min or two to register.

So you just waited for a while after interacting, and it eventually popped?

So you just waited for some minites after interacting, and it eventually popped?

The NPC will tell you if you are doing it right, and there's one point you need to wait for him to do his animation. I didn't understand that at first, thought it was bugged, and had to restart the quest to realize I was supposed to wait for him.

If you aren't at that part yet, you may just need to try agan with the volume up to hear instructions, as some of the valves need multiple turns to get right, and he tells you when you need to stop or change valves, etc.
