Today when I launch ESO, I get an update in the launcher, then the window immediately closes with the message Shutting Down. The game does not start.

Same thing happens to me, but only with the EGS launcher. With the regular Zenimax launcher, it updates correctly and works fine (just that, of course, I can't log into my EGS account with the regular launcher).
    Barra agea ry sou karan.

I've done the normal launcher and the Epic one too.....

Both said "updating" then launcher shut, then I got an "updating" pop-up on my desk top which updated and then the launcher re-opened.

It took a few seconds though. :)

I hit that as well today as my Windows 10 updated.

I got around it by turning off Windows Defender launching ESO (Obviously this will temporarily leave your system vulnerable) and letting it update then turning Windows Defender back on.

I found that others had success from https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/674755/game-launcher-updating-then-shutting-down-cannot-start-game

If you do that please be sure to turn Windows Defender back on.

Obviously, this is not great advice and should not be the solution but...

    Issue this:
    07/10/2025 21:06:50 DEBUG - Workflow.1c6b393a - Task.b9d18f4e.copyMetafile - Copying file (C:\GameLibs\Steam\steamapps\common\Zenimax Online\Launcher\selfupdate\Bethesda.net_Launcher.json -> C:\GameLibs\Steam\steamapps\common\Zenimax Online\Launcher\Bethesda.net_Launcher.json)

    Solution:
    Copy yourself this file "Bethesda.net_Launcher.json"

from your current ESO Steam App directory, e.g. C:\Steam\steamapps\common\Zenimax Online\Launcher\selfupdate\Bethesda.net_Launcher.json

    to this:
    C:\Steam\steamapps\common\Zenimax Online\Launcher\Bethesda.net_Launcher.json

    adjust your path if needed
Keep in mind there are two different paths (the first one is in the selfupdate subdirectory!)

@ZOS_Kraken not using Steam and nothing tried seems to work on updating the Launcher -only works directly from :\Program Files (x86)\Zenimax Online\The Elder Scrolls Online\game\client\eso64
  • rsscottonb16_ESO
    Did this:

Search for 'Virus & threat protection'.
Under 'Virus & threat protection settings', click 'Manage settings'
    Toggle 'Real-time protection' to OFF
Launch ESO from your usual shortcut.
Launcher runs and updates without issue, full game then loads.
    TURN REAL-TIME PROTECTION back ON

Seems like the latest update today with the golden pursuits for scribing going live is doing something screwy and stopping the Launcher update from happening - c'mon ZOS you should be testing these things fully, I've changed nothing else on my system and worked fine at 7am this morning before the new scribing going live

I've tried all these and so many more including five game reinstalls over three drives and I get this.

    pvbu65xyiafw.jpg

It comes up instantly and Ive used three different internet accounts so it isnt the router.

Ive had assistance from Zos and followed reams and reams of firewall allowances and ports allowances on each of the ROuters/connections... 3, O2. Vodaphone and so on and on... I cannot get past ths. Its driving me mad.

Initially I styarted getting game crashes after at the launcher it told me it couldnt get the news etc...

    Now Im stuck here.

I mean I could do an entire computer reload, C reformat and windows 11 re install and all drivers are updated and renewed and on and on and on. But only to find the same error after three solid days reloading?

I'm brainwashed. Totally saddened. Out of ideas.

When I click CLOSE everything closes.

    Sigh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Redid the Virus & threat protection thing... No go.

WHAT is stopping the game from seeing an internet connection OR... it CAN see the connection but something isnt triggering? When I click CLOSE the main launcher doesnt stay there so I cant get ot the usual REPAIR in the drop down because the entire launcher snuffs it.

    I did this also @rsscottonb16_ESO

But the game asks me for my username and apssword after whcih it THEN says, Your credentials are either incorrect or dissallowed???
    Well theyre not incorrect!!!

MY fear is that EVEN if ZOS do something my system cannot download it. it dies on attenpt. So, it's going to have to be an external .exe file to go in from isnide NOT form the web.
If the system is squealing about "FAILED TO DOWNLOAD THE APPLICATION LIABRARY" (Not forgetting that thje message BEFORE this one.... yes there've been a few, stated it couldnt downloada the PATCH... the latest patch... ) HOW is it g oing to repair?

It cant see the web? It doesnt know its online. Everything else is OK online updating loading interactivity etc etc etc etc... but this is a dead duck.
Out of ideas. Oh my God I miss the environemnt. I miss it I miss it. I live in this world. Its such a wonderful distraction from life hell.

@Princess_Kassiopeia it looks like you are playing via Steam can you verify the files from there, it's similar to a repair?

Right click on ESO in your library > pick properties > installed files > there you should see the option to verify the game files.

How did you get a folder called selfupdate? I dont have this install folder???

That selfupdate folder was created when the launcher started and attempted to update itself. The launcher then simply closed, and the update process began again on the next launch. So, the directory was created during the update process.
Check out the steam discussion page too for this issue - some people could solved this issue when temp. disconnecting from their network (wifi / lan).

I am running PC version (not Steam - Epic or other). Launcher starts, updates, closes.
I am left with a spare folder called "selfupdate" and I have a daily file "host.developer.mm.dd.yyyy" that is a text document.

    AS IT HAPPENS....
After 5 miserable days of trying the usual inane hunting and trying and hoping.........
I opted for one day of Rebuilding Drive C:\.

    I gave in, Admitted defeat...
    I formatted C,
    Reinstalled Windows 11.
Reinstalled by design softwares, Graphics softwares and then......
    Steam and then.........
    ESO
    And it purrs again...

and I am alive in my world of distraction once more. So odd I tried SO MANY MANY things to make it work and it just didnt.
Never found out what suddenly changed to kill the game.

Thankyou to all those who tried to help.

Here ESO is more than a game. It preoccupies me in a world of miserable pain and fear and demise.
So it's very important to me to be able to find that wonderful spiritual feel of "not being here but 'there' instead."
It's a blessing that you dont know quite what that would feel like.
