I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place. Please move my post if so. I don't really come onto the forums anymore, but I decided to post this coz it might help someone.

Firstly, as you all know, WIn 10 EoL is coming soon and Win 11... if you know: you know. If you don't know, a quick Google will fix that.
Linux is good. It's better if you have an AMD GPU, but I don't and it took me a while to get it sorted.

Linux isn't just one operating system (aka "distribution" or "distro"), there are a lot and I researched for ages. Looking into "gamer distros", Pop!_OS, Nobara, Garruda: those are the 3 you wanna look into imo. If it's a family PC, you can get Linux MInt, (not Zorin - Zorin is Linux, taken by a company to be monetized. DO not get Zorin), and Mint comes with loads of useful FOSS programs preinstalled,

ESO does NOT like Linux so here's what I did (with a buncha help from Gemini - btw you can copy/paste terminal text and give to Gemini to interpret and help):

Step 1: ☠️ the launcher after game launches.
If your game runs like poopies, it might be the launcher.

Step 2: Use specific version of Proton. Listen, GE Proton is a pain to figure out how and where to put the files, but once you have it sorted you're good.
If your game won't even run at all, you need to use a specific version of Proton (Game Properties in Steam - Compatibility). GE-Proton10-4 was what works for me. Also, in the Steam Game Properties for ESO, in General, I pasted (because Gemini said it would help)

PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 DXVK_ASYNC=1 PROTON_SET_GAME_DRIVE=1 WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR=0 WINE_FULLSCREEN_DSR=0 SDL_VIDEODRIVER=wayland KWIN_XWAYLAND_FORCE_SCANOUT=1 __GL_SYNC_TO_VBLANK=0 %command%

Step 4: Profit!

Step 5: The recommended driver for my GPU was being a s'wit
If your FPS is low, or you seem to be getting input lag, maybe it's a bad driver. I found that "NVIDIA Graphics drivers (New Feature) for Linux with Official Nvidia Open Modules (Recommended)" from the Advanced Device Profiles was what I needed to get my GPU working properly.

Step 6: Do you have a separate game drive? You're gonna wanna backup files and reformat the drive to EXT 4 so that you can take full ownership of your files. Gotta do drive permanent mounting. It's not so difficult.
If you can't even get at the game files, NTFS is being a blighter.

NGL, setup was a real pain in the peach emoji, but I'm really loving Linux over Windows. Glad I never bothered with Win 11, yes I know there's a Lite version, but I'm done with Microsoft. No way I'm risking Bill Gates seeing what I'm watching when I'm not gaming 🤣😂 (you're all thinking it).

SO yeah, if you built your own rig like the PCMR you are, and you mod BGS games like the CBBE connoseur you are, maybe come join the LPCGMR? We have KDE Plasma and Khronkite K-Win scripts for tiiiiiling... 😉

Say NO to Crown Crates. Crown Crates are Loot Boxes. Loot Boxes are gambling. Zenimax makes enough money off us.

I was on Linux for a while, it was so hyped up by an allegedly open system, few viruses, etc.. But in fact, I had problems with programs and games. The fact is that some programs don't run on Linux, and some games are buggy on it.

The only good thing about it is that it's simple and minimal, and there's no unnecessary clutter like in Windows.

Does it work with addons? and TTC? maybe TTC can run on mono?

    My addons seem to work.

    Lazy Writ Crafter
    Lost Treasures
    Harvest Map
    Go Home

    That sort of thing.

I got a couple odd bugs here and there but mostly yes.

I shall now viscously argue against you and question every aspect of your existence because I am now a Linux Fanboy! *grr! argh!*

    lol. nah.

You do make a valid point. A lot of Windows programs will not run on LInux, so if you HAVE to use PhotoShop, for example, you're stuck on Windows. But there are many FOSS (Free & Open Source Software) solutions to many commonly used programs.

VLC Media Player, Blender, Audacity, FireFox: all of these are actually FOSS.

Oh yeah, and Minion works on LInux too. It's availible as a flatpack at least.

I think maybe Nvidia doesn't like Linux, I had to do almost none of that on an Intel/AMD system.

The game just ran with literally nothing extra. I got some extra frames from closing the launcher, changing Proton to experimental, turning off the Steam overlay, and turning off kernel split lock mitigation.

Minion flatpak just worked, though the addons folder was a bit tricky to find.

    Kubuntu 25.04

I have a newish nvidia card and run arch Linux and have had zero problems running eso, including addons. Worked great right out of the box if you use Steam. I downloaded the game, right clicked, and enabled the compatibility layer using Proton experimental. Works great.

That said, Linux itself it not for everyone. If you run windows and want to switch to Linux, there will be a a learning curve. But if you are already familiar with Linux and want to know if you can play eso, yes, you can, and it’s very easy.

I figured it’s implied at this point. :)

Eta: But seriously the arch install process is not nearly as manual as it used to be when it got the reputation it has (unless you want it to be). And upgrades couldn’t be easier. So it’s not just for computer nerds.

Yeah, I saw the PewDiePie vid too.

In addition to Insightful, Agree, and Awesome, there should be a Confused post response option.

I'm not a PewDiePie fan, but he's a big name on the interwebs and has a large following, so with him going Linux, it'll likely bring some small number of people over to Linux. I think it him who did a walkthrough on the Arch install. Mighta been someone else tho tbf. But I've seen it's easier than it apparently used to be.
