try going into your ESO folder in documents, live, then open usersettings.txt search and replace these:

    SET RequestedNumJobThreads "0"

    SET RequestedNumWorkerThreads "0"

It does seem like this might be a deadlock somewhere, possibly caused by an addon or library. I will check this out :)

I have got UI errors when switching form one character to another since a few weeks
    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/674956/reload-ui-bug-after-last-patch-befor-game-update-45#latest
but not when loading the first character after connexion.

Since yesterday, I have this UI error (several times) when loading the first character after connexion

And today, I had a crash with reboot of the PC when playing.

After that, I got several crashes at start-up when trying to launch the game (before the connexion screen)
No crash / freeze of the PC, but an ESO error window proposing to send a report

FInally I was able to connect after several tries.

Maybe these issues are related to your crash / freeze at startup

set the values to "4", if the crash return try set it to "2" , this has improve performance for me

For me, this issue is mainly caused by Alt+Tabbing during loading screens (am running ESO in borderless windowed mode). Once it happens, I need to restart my PC. If I just restart ESO it will keep happening even if I am careful to not touch anything during loading.

I’m giving up for now. I’ve been playing since 2015 and I’ve never experienced anything like this. I literally can’t play the game, so I’m just going to take a break. I had purchased the Season Pass and ESO Plus, but unfortunately, they don’t offer refunds.

    Same experience.
I have been playing since 2015 until end 2024 with my old PC (Intel core i7 / W10). No problem excepted sometims the bug of the launcher 'patch manifest error'.

With my new PC (Intel core i9 / W11), everything was perfect until March 2025.
    Then happens:
    - W11 update 24H2
    - ESO update 45
    - I made the error to install the new nVidia app and drivers

Since then, this is problem after problem:
    - the 'unable to load skin' bug of the launcher
    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/674955/summary-unable-to-load-skin-error#latest
    - the 'reload UI' bug
    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/674956/reload-ui-bug-after-last-patch-befor-game-update-45#latest
    - graphic glitches and even crashes:
    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/678623/graphic-glitrches-eso-nvidia#latest
    - and now the crashes at startup more frequent after ESO update 46 as described above

It's nice to add new content to the game, but the priority should be quality insurance to adapt the launcher and the client to modern PC: Core i9 CPU, W11 24H2, nVidia recent drivers, ...

There are many ESO issues with W11 compared to W10.
At fall this year, MS will stop the support for W10
Then it's really time for a better compatibility between ESO and W11 (especially 24H2).

Install the latest Windows Update. Microsoft fixed it. It was the Easy Anti-Cheat incompatibility issue. Surprise surprise, computers that weren't supposed to be offered the buggy patch were offered the buggy patch. ESO works without issue for me now, no thanks to ZoS customer agents that gave me one "solution" per day (delete addons, make more space on the hdd, etc) and probably still haven't read this thread.

Just tested the game again. I opened the launcher, logged into my character normally, then closed both the game and the launcher. When I tried to open it again, the launcher started up fine, but right before reaching the character screen, my PC froze. So I guess the Windows update didn’t actually help after all.

At this point, it’s pretty clear this is either a ZOS or Microsoft issue. Can we please get some actual help on this? It’s affecting multiple players and none of the usual troubleshooting steps are working.

I have been playing more and I can confirm the problem is still there, although it happens less after the Windows Update. The reason I didn't see it earlier is because I just did some dungeons and there is no problem there.

The freezing and FPS-drops seem to happen when changing zones (without a loading screen) or when new players or NPCs load in. I have no issues at all inside dungeons, but I can basically force a freeze by sprinting with my mount in a city. ZOS really needs to take a serious look at this.

I made a ticket a few days ago but it's so damn slow... They only recently moved me to "a specialized team".

Had this same issue months ago. To completely fix the unable to load skin error you have to put in the correct powerlimits for your cpu in the bios. A new bios update should do this automatically, but you can also do this manually. (Be very careful when updating/changing the bios, or let a professional handle this for you!) When the i9 13 and 14 series was released, motherboards did not have powerusage safeguards in place. This has even caused damage to some CPU's. My guess is with a too high powerusage the cpu processes more data than the ESO client is expecting to receive, causing it to give the unable to load skin error.
The above should also fix the UI errors, as these are caused by the same issue.
*This unable to load skin error is unrelated to any ESO update.*

Not sure on how to fix the crashes and freezes, but there is a chance a bios update will also fix this. But these issues may just be related to ESO's latest update.

PS: Keep in mind, ESO and other software is constantly updated, using new code. New code which may only be available in newer driver updates, and may only work with newer driver updates.
PPS: These powerusage issues with motherboards and the i9 14/14 series should have never happened with the newer hardware releases, it is only now that users have to play catch-up.
PPPS: If your pc freezes entirely, there is probably a major hardware conflict somewhere. Make sure to investigate this further. No single program or game should ever be able to freeze your entire pc.

First off. Only use the launcher to update or repair. Close it after. Then only load the eso from the exe. Just make a shortcut for it.

I agree eso pulls insane single loads if you let it. Causing lots of crash problems. It's not specific to intel.

Only use the base gpu drivers, not thier crazy software that turns random stuff on by default. Can still use msi afterburner.

Turn off vsync, then turn off gsync/freesync. Turn off low latency mode/anti lag in drivers. Power limit or clock limit both cpu and gpu. I have both manufacturers here at my house. Eso hates antilag/low latency and frame sync.

One system here is 7600x/5700xt. Cpu stock with expo on. Gpu is downclocked to 1900mhz, 1100mv, -10% power limit these days.

Other is laptop. 13700hx, uv-120, power limit 100/120w, clock limit 4.6ghz all pcore/3ghz all ecore. 4090m with 920mv +200mhz curve limit.

Something else that interferes with eso is the razer software package. Also enchanced pointer precision in mouse settings in Windows. Hardware acceleration in browsers and discord.
This recent update has made me sad. Sad for the game. Sad for the community. Sad to pay whatever it is now. I want the previous eso back.

All good suggestions, just wanted to add something to the above quote. Having g-sync/freesync on will save gpu and cpu processing, therefor can prevent lag/stutter if they are on. For ESO, just try these on/off and see what works best for you. This may differ wildly based on the system you are using.
Also, when suggesting to turn off v-sync, atleast tell players to limit their fps/hz, to prevent their gpu's from going crazy by creating unlimited frames when they do not need to. To limit hz/fps, use the nvidia control panel, and do this both globally and for ESO. Globally for idle, and ESO for load. (Personally I have my 4k 144hz monitor fps limited to 79 global and 61 for ESO.)

Just wanted to specifiy these things, before someone may create an even bigger issue for themselves when following that advice.

PS: Limiting your cpu and gpu power/clock limits is always a must! At the very least check them to see if these values are correct when you use a (new) system.

This friday when I tried to play the game it kept freezing as soon as I try loading a char. I can not even close the game with ALT+F4, TAB out or open taskmanager. All I can do is reboot my PC.
Never had an issue till now in the past ten years.

I tried removing all my AddOns to see if that helped but no.

So today I decided to reinstall my entire PC.
I redownloaded ESO for a fresh install and before adding any AddOns I launched the game and it successfully loaded into a char.

So I closed the game, started installing AddOns and then tried again, but then it was freezing again like before.
So I removed the AddOns again, but still the game froze.

So I uninstalled and re-installed. On the first launch the char loads, no freezing.

However when I quit the game and trying launching a second time it froze and now it keeps freezing.

So it only works that first time after a re-install

I tried setting the graphics to the lowest possible, turning off everything that can be turned off. I got into the game but again it froze as soon as I moved around a bit and it had to load new stuff.

This is a different issue from the crashing/freezing this thread is about, but your issue could be caused by a bad ssd, ssd filemoving, or the ESO files really being corrupted.
Not sure about your specs, but my guess is this is caused by your ssd moving files around on it's own, and you rebooting/shutting off your computer while this moving is in progress. As this is most likely, especially after an update.
To fix this, first repair the game files from the launcher(only do this once!), then afterwards EVERY TIME you do something on your computer wait atleast 20 seconds before shutting down/rebooting your computer. If you do any tasks of writing to/removing from your ssd, including through apps, wait atleast 10 seconds afterwards before doing anything else(starting other apps/games/programs). Yes, this requires a bit of patience.

This ESO corrupted file error can/will also take place after installing any updates for ESO and not allowing the SSD enough time to re-arrange these files as the SSD is learning where to place these new files and is moving them accordingly. So even if the problem is gone, keep the 10 and 20 second rules in place as a routine if you have an SSD, as it is also important with updates and anything else you do on the SSD. My guess is that this is what happened and is causing the above screenshot.

This solution should over the course of a few days to a week/weeks fix the corrupted file errors, so this should occur less and less. Depending on how much you use your computer and ESO. (assuming your ssd isn't broken, which I doubt)

    Hopefully this helps.

PS: Explanation: The problem is this: SSD's become faster because they quietly move the most used files to the front of the ssd and the least used files to the back. Meaning these fronted files become quicker to access. This is perfect and fine, but this process happens quietly and when this process is interrupted(restart/reboot/shut down) it can leave incomplete files laying around. These files are NOT damaged nor incomplete! For the SSD to complete the entire file moving this file has to be used again, so the SSD notices it will have to finish moving that file. So keep playing ESO.
As I said, these files are not damaged and are just waiting for the SSD to complete it's moving process. Normally you would not notice anything about this process, barely any programs/apps will notice. But ESO does not like it when part of the file is at one place, and the other part is in another. Causing ESO to notify you of a possible file corruption. For some reason ESO is very sensitive about this.
Over time, when the most used files are already moved to their most logical front of drive file locations, this moving process will hardly ever take place again. This is why this issue mostly only happens with new SSD's, SSD's which have lost power, or SSD's which are not used much, or when there are updates to programs. Basically SSD's which have not been able to completely finish/perfect the moving process over a longer period of time yet.

My Computer only started having issues a bit after the patch. I was able to spend like 4 hours in the new zone over 2 days no problem. But next time i got on(mightve been after the windows update) i was having the same issues as above. If i brute force it, i can load in, but i cannot move very far without crashing. i can access every menu fine, and even with players popping in through the waystone, it seems to handle it. but inevitably, it will crash in a couple minutes. looking at task manager, cpu is the only thing that is maxxing out to the point of crashing.

through my contact(s) in zos tech support, they seem to think its my external drive that it is installed on. but i can play many other games on the drive just fine with no issue, and according to TM it seems pretty normal.

Im hoping the next patch or windows update will fix it, and ill be able to get my golden pursuit pet.

and causes game crashes and freezes your pc-all other games working fine btw (example D3 and D4)
