Unknown (master) writs

Why aren't these under the Consumables > Master Writs subcategory? ;_;
It would make more sense to look for them there, instead of under Miscellaneous.

Please, I beg you.

When you open them they turn into ordinary writs. But they don't stack anymore.

I'm a free player - I've purchased ESO+ only once - so inventory and bank management are old hat for me. When I get new stuff that I don't recognize I usually just vendor it or DESTROY it if it cannot be vendored. I've destroyed dozens and dozens and dozens of surveys, treasure maps, writs, crafting recipes and even some crafting materials.

The Crafting Bag that unlocks ONLY with ESO+ is nice but, for me, it's not worth having ESO+ every month. ZOS will need to spice up what ESO+ gives for me to spring for it more often.

So, don't be afraid to sell or DESTROY these things. It's not the end of the world.

The OP is requesting that the new master writ envelopes be visible under the Master Writ tab in inventory. Not sure why you're bringing up ESO+ or the DESTROY command.

They DO stack when in envelope form. After you open and retrieve them, they don't stack - same as it was before.

Am I only one who finds this feature beyond useless? I need to open the writ envelope to see if I want to do it. Am I the only person who decides if a writ is worth doing on a writ-by-writ basis? If I want to do it, I need to do it immediately or it is stuck using an inventory slot. If I don't want to do it, I need to sell it immediately or destroy it immediately or it is stuck using an inventory slot.

What's the motif? What's the trait? What's the style? What's the quality? How many vouchers? All the things I want to know about a writ are hidden by the envelope. Writs used to be half good and half lousy and use up too much inventory. They still are now, but with extra mouse clicks.

Am I doing something wrong or misunderstanding something?

I don't think you're doing anything wrong, everybody deals with writs differently. If you need to know instantly the writ details, then it can feel like an extra, unneccessary step to open the envelope, but if you are somebody that doesn't need to deal with writs immediately, it is a great inventory saving method.

I don't find this feature useful, either. I never hold on to writs. I either do them right away, or junk 'em. Having them stack this way does absolutely nothing for me.

I save them and only do them during xp events with the exception of alchemy. Alchemy is used to power level if I need something I don't have ready.

I don‘t do writs immediately. I keep them until I have enough, then do them all in one when there‘s an XP event. So this new feature saves me 100+ slots and I can keep them all in one spot.
Before the update I had to divide them through multiple alts to save space in my bank.

The new stacking mechanic is only a short term benefit. Sure, it'll open up bank and inventory spaces for a great many players at first.

But eventually those free spots will invariably fill with other items that didn't previously didn't make the cut in favor of using those slots for writs. And when that happens, unless the player has 100% motifs and Researches completed, they will have to sell or destroy those they can't complete to make room for writs that they can complete.

A document storage would have been a much better solution. Some place to store your writs, maps, and surveys.

It's not useless for me because I save master writs over a period of months and then do them all at one time.

One of the few things I liked with the patch.
Stacking writs does have several advantages. As someone already said, you can hoard them to do them on a XP event.
The same way you can also hoard them to sell them on a XP event, as prices always explode (alchemy writs were on 100k+ when the update hitted).

Also hint for everyone: Zenithar event will come at the end of the month. There you get a event box for every writ-type per day.

To directly answer your question, after reading every response to the OP, it seemed to me that the OP and/ or the respondents were concerned about limited Inventory and bank space due to potentially useless items such as writs and wouldn't mind a polite reminder that items CAN be vendored and destroyed to free up valuable Inventory and bank space.

I hope this puts to rest your concerns and allows you to sleep well tonight.

you get ONE box per account per day doing master writs. you can't really spam them for stuff. so its of limited utility for that. better returns if you use them to eat up enlightenment, subclassing skills, or hold for exp event.

thats why holding them in a stack has value. lets say you have a stack of 100 of these. you open them all up now and of the 100 you can only complete 50 right now. that means you have to toss half of them or find a way to store them. but if you hold those 100 in a single stack its easier to store, and buys you time to complete more of your motif and training library and farm mats/gold to complete. in a month it could mean that you only have to toss 25 of those instead of 50.

In the last Zenithar event you were able to get 7 boxes. One for each type (blacksmithing, clothing, woodworking, jewelry, alchemy, enchanting and provisioning).
First box is probably gold, while the other 6 are purple.
So if the event runs 10 days, you can stack 10 writs per type already, instead of blocking 70 slots.

They are sellable as unknown because they are stackable. You could save up and sell a huge stack of consumable unknown writs during an xp event while using very little room in your bank to save them up.

This is the best QoL change Zos has made in a long time.

Nope. I wish there was an option to turn it off. I usually stay on top of master writs, so all this does is add an extra step. I now have to get writs out of the envelope, then use them. And I'd like to be able to see a writ before I pull it out. Better yet, let me turn this feature off.

But then how would you find the one you wanted in a stack of 10 or more blacksmithing writs? You'd either have to consume them one at a time and hope you could do them all (maybe if you've been playing a while you could), or you'd need to split them individually, use what you wanted, then re-stack them. I suspect that's why ZOS ended up containerizing the writs.

Another example of be careful what you ask for in this game. I’m not a hoarder so I’ll have to unbox them just to know if I can do them or will have to sell them. I guess if I decide to keep some in the bank they will recompress themselves. I’m on console so I can’t see for myself yet.

It’s just like those gold furnishing folios for old furnishing plans that you can’t see the contents. Sure that meets the requirements of saving slots but causes more frustration for the player to get what they want out of it.
