I’m writing as a longtime ESO player who is extremely disappointed with the Update 46 decision to cap Fatecarver’s beam at 6 targets.
This kind of hard AoE cap has been tried in other MMOs like World of Warcraft, and it was widely rejected by the playerbase because it ruins the fun and flow of large-scale gameplay. Here’s why this is a poor design move:
It punishes players who pull large packs and position skillfully. Instead of rewarding tactical play, it imposes an arbitrary ceiling.
It feels terrible in practice. Fatecarver is the Arcanist’s signature ability, and cutting off its impact past 6 enemies destroys the fantasy and power of the class.
It does not meaningfully improve performance. Server lag in big fights comes from engine and network load, not one class ability. This change is not going to fix the underlying issue.
It has already been tried and failed in WoW. Blizzard capped AoE abilities and had to walk it back later because players hated it. Please learn from that experience.
Arcanist is one of the most exciting additions to ESO in years. Please do not kneecap the class’s defining ability with an artificial limit that neither improves performance nor gameplay satisfaction simply because the sweaty try-hards of ESO find ways to make it "Game Breaking".
