Proposal: slot refund when deleting character

Subclassing and the armory slot sale got me thinking.

It seems like character-based slots are a bad deal, especially if you aren't sure you're going to keep that character. Now I would never dream of deleting one of mine, but people do, and these people will probably never buy a character-based slot because of this. What if outfit and armory slots went into your account's gift inbox when deleting a character who had them? I feel like this would be a nice QOL feature that some people might appreciate. That said, the number of people affected might be very low for the amount of work involved in making it happen.

So what do you all think?

When I think of a character slot, armor slot etc, I think of it as a permanent upgrade to my account. I wouldn't expect a refund for something like that just because I changed my mind.

Yea I already regret it. Had I know subclassing is coming, I would have bought less slots (I'm an avid theorycrafter so I need lots of slots to "hold" builds in progress). Now I'm committed to those characters with bought slots since deleting them would mean throwing money away (sunk cost).

Back to topic, I seriously don't think ZOS would allow refund on this.

If you buy an appearance change token, then delete the character, do they refund your token? No.

Or just delete one of the characters you haven't invested a lot of time or crown store upgrades into, if I go so far as to buy outfit/armoury slots, skill lines, sky shard's etc.. on a character that is a character I intend to keep until the game gets shut down.

The consumable tokens like name, race, appearance, can remain as they are.

Armory slots should be like character slots and remain with the account, not the character, if the character is deleted.

I personally think they shouldn't be 'refundable' as such, they should be added to the account like character slots rather than to the individual character.

Then it would be up to the player to assign them as they see fit.

Ideally they should be account wide (as in, you unlock a slot for each an every character per purchase) but I don't want to alert the horde of 'but will no one think of the poor, poor shareholders' stans.

Said that it has not been an issue for me so far; I seldom delete characters, and with the upcoming subclassing the likelihood of me doing that is even lower.

As a matter of habit I level all the skill lines/skills/morphs (except antiquities because the grind is a bit too much and WW because they made it decent in Greymoor then patch after patch they relentlessly hammered it down until it turned into an RP skill line; I'd say I'm at 50% on those ones), research all 9 traits, learn all reagents/runes and collect all the skyshard/dungeon/PD/MQ skill points and at least 13 AvA ones (happens while lvling AvA skill lines to 10) which means the money invested on slots pales in comparison to the time spent 'developing' each character.

I think I'd rather take a break until I no longer wish to delete a character than going ahead and doing so.

I would have agreed with you until subclassing cam along. It’s the same as if a class got seriously nerfed before too. What if they just aren’t fun playing anymore? If I change the appearance of a character and it got nerfed, I would at least still use that character for daily crafting writs. You don’t need armory slots for that. What if you had a character with multiple armory slots for trials or PvP and it gets delegated to daily writs? The armory slots are useless now.

I was thinking of this when I bought a few armory slots the other day. If I felt more confident in how this will all turn out, I most likely would have bought more.

EDIt: I should clarify, you can still appreciate an appearance change token in this case where with an armory slots you cannot

Before subclassing, I would have leaned into the "buyer beware" mentality.

But now monitoring the effects of subclassing, I've got two characters with armory slots that will likely go to waste. I don't know that I'd want or expect a refund per se. But I would think that the option to convert those now defunct armory slots into Armory Slot Tokens should be on the table.

I appreciated the approach in Star Wars: The Old Republic to these types of upgrades: You could pay one amount to apply the upgrade to a single character, or you could pay a larger amount to apply the upgrade permanently to all your character slots.

I was going to say I don't need this, but that's because I won't buy things like outfit and armoury slots for a character unless I'm 100% sure I will never delete them. Which means there's only 2 characters on my account I will buy them for, and then ony if I have a specific and immediate use for it.

I suspect ZOS could sell more of these upgrades if they were transferable.

Or if it was an account upgrade that applied to all characters.

I suspect that there are enough people willing to purchase armory slots for individual characters that ZOS will never even consider a change.

And that is the difference between "account bound" and "character bound".

I personally feel that armory and outfit slots are a poor value for their price, even when in sale. If there was some sort of refund feature, or any other way to transfer them from one character to another, I think that would help and I might even buy more of them.

Same here. A lot of my characters are only around for a while. Like employees at a business or students at a school or college. Eventually, they move on to other things and I never see them again.

I bought all the character slots, have the max of 20 characters. Subclassing makes about half of those characters obsolete, but it is what it is. I still play the majority of them, when the occasion arises.
I don't buy per-character slots like outfit/armory, because I personally consider them a bad deal being per-character when they should be account-wide.
