I wrote that poorly, it feels not so random. Like a bandaid makeshift anti-cheat to prevent farming, but not effecting everyone, as there are bots there not being disconnected. I can just reconnect, but it is rather annoying.

I think it turns out to be an addon causing it, I have never run into this issue before but searching google it seems this issue has popped up in the past from addons and mater writ turn ins as well. Now to figure out which addon is causing it. I am guessing one of the trade or crafting related ones since it was an issue with writs in the past. I do have an alchemy one too, maybe that is what was causing your issue with research, though I have used it quite a bit to unlock combinations without issue.

It is just a little hub "town" in Reapers, there is a sort little intro quest to unlock the races/fights. Lots of neutral NPC's with no guards as it is kind of a shady place.
