Wow! This is a whole new level of monetization. Has anyone ever heard of a company doing something like this before?

Pieces of sports stadiums are often sold, auctioned, or given to charity to sell or auction to raise money from fans wanting to buy pieces of the venues where games were played. This is decently similar, imo.

And the Bethesda Gear store has long sold a lot of high-priced, limited-issue items.

I think what surprised me most, was that we haven't seen ZOS say a thing about it here. You'd think they would sticky a post about it, but I supposed they are worried about people claiming they are trying to monetize the anniversary. Well yeah, they ARE a 'for profit' company, and I don't think the price is bad considering the plaque presentation- I've seen worse items selling for even more. Have you seen the cost of those 'collector editions' of some games? Hundreds of $$ for a plastic statue; in fact, the collector's edition of AC Shadows is going for over $400 now, I've seen similar with other games. So I think that $110 for a piece of your gaming history isn't such a bad thing, especially if you've been playing the game for most of those 10 years and invested thousands of hours into it.

It may be designed nicely, but a frame of "MDF wood" (which is saw dust or wood chippings, basically the leftovers or bad quality parts that can't be sold as solid wood, and glue pressed into shape), a machine-engraved zinc-alloy sheet (usually that's zinc/tin, which are the least expensive metals) and some polyester (= plastic) velvet foil (a whole meter of self-adhesive velvet costs about 2 dollars - I've used it to repair a few old trinket boxes and picture frames myself) is hardly valuable, in terms of material costs. In the end with collectibles you always pay for the sentimental value - or for the "exclusive/rare/limited edition" hype.

That's true, and it won't change as long as fans are willing so spend hundreds for plastic figurines. And honestly, they can if they like. Everyone has to know for themselves what they clutter their homes with.

My word, they actually found a way to convince us to pay for the old hardware they replaced so that they can make money back on it. I don't know whether or not I should be outraged or impressed. I'm going to go with amused.

Every time real life keeps me away from ESO, I always return to find something a bit crazy awaiting me XD

Admittedly though, I'm enough of a fan of this game to kiiiiiind of want it. A little bit. But only a little. As a collector, the price point is a turn off for what it is, and I don't really find the presentation that attractive.

Oh, and about the MDF wood frame- to anyone who buys it, be careful hanging it and unpacking it. That stuff is easy to chip or scratch the surface on, and splits horribly. Looks like it comes with the hardware to hang it and you have to utilize it yourself. Take care doing so. It wont be a fun time if you split the back after paying that much for it.

The Bethesda Gear store has been around quite a while. They sell physical merchandise related to games and IPs developed by ZeniMax Media-owned studios (especially Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Starfield, and Doom).

Just like Bethesda Softworks publishes those ZeniMax Media games, whether developed by Bethesda Game Studios (TES series proper, Fallout, Starfield), ZeniMax Online Studios (the ESO spin-off), or id (Doom).

My first thought was that this might have been a nice memento to give to the employees who are still there who were also there at the beginning.

But my second thought was it might end up like that scene with the printer in Office Space, so maybe not.

Talk about a walk down memory lane...
Back in the 90's I worked at an computer store and we did a lot of ugrades from 486 20-25 MHz to 50-66.
Friend there used 9 of the old cpu's pressed into an wood plate to make an 9 core pot stand as the 486 has an ceramic top.

Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Wow! This is a whole new level of monetization. Has anyone ever heard of a company doing something like this before?

Blizzard did this with their old WoW serverblades too - since they have more specific realms and not megaservers I knew than quite some pple who wanted a piece.

Googled a bit - because I was curious -- sold in 2012 for 100$ a piece - current rumored value is around 3k (in a 2 year old reddit). Depends a lot if the blade is from the right server I guess, people will want one from the server they played on.

I like the idea, it´s something like a physical manifestation of the game, better than a statue. If you are into memorabilia that makes sense.

I'd personally enjoy a statue of my main a lot more than this (if well-made and not cheap-looking). The main reason is that when I think of my time in ESO, the things I've done with my character(s) come to my mind. I, personally, couldn't care less about the hardware the game ran on.

    MDF? Nah, I'll pass.

Would have been cool, but I'm not paying over a hundred bucks for something that's made mostly of glue. A slab of solid wood for the display mount might have been worth it.

Got it even tough delivery costs for Italy are 2/5 of the total... Still i had to have it.
I'm a beta player that stuck with the game nonstop for 11 years. At this point ESO is an important part of my life. So many adventures, so many friends and so many memories.
I wish i could have selected a piece of the EU server tough... you know for reasons.....

Big thanks ZOS for 11 years of fun!

Its tools to 3d print characters from WOW but its far from trivial in ESO I think also resolution is much higher in ESO.
