Question about Refined Paintings in Base Zones

Background to this thread:

I wanted to purchase either Domas Phrasticus house in Craglorn or Strident Springs Demesne in Reapers March. I was interested in a house with an Imperial theme and obtaining it as a furnished house. I ended up with the larger Stident Springs, but was noticing the differences between the two in a Crown Store preview.

The smaller one in Craglorn has a lot of the “Painting of _________, Refined” furnishings in them. First, I checked my bank contents. I farm a lot of treasure chests, and I didn’t have a single one of them. So I went to the guild traders to find some. There are several listed in the search options, and I am not counting the ones from Summerset. I couldn’t find any of them either.

My question is, do these really drop from sources in the game. I would believe that since they can be searched in guild traders that they must be, yet the fact that 10 years of farming chests has not resulted in a single one is baffling.

If they are not obtained from looting in game then they should be removed. I mean, these are not Velothi Triptyches and anything like that, yet I have actually seen those for sale in guild traders.

It seems that some paintings can only be found in either furnished homes or the housing vendor or housing packs, and not found in game. There are some refined paintings that can be found rarely in loot chests, but others seem to be part of a specific pack.

They aren't the only paintings that are available this way, I saw some with ,Metal and ,Wood and a couple of others that say they are from the housing vendor only.

This is according to UESP.

As for being removed from the game, I am not sure why? You can obtain them, just not through looting? Or do you mean remove them from being searchable in the guild trader (I don't use the trader often, so I don't know quite how it works).

it could be that they aren't bound, so technically they *could* be sold, but since they are a housing vendor item/come with furnished houses, no one is selling them.

I just did a quick search on TTC for PC-EU and found at least one refined painting that has several listings.

That one was called Painting of Summerset Coast, Refined.

Not knowing exact names of others I just did that one search but there is at least one design available unbound.

I am not in game atm but I think I may have some in my stash of paintings, not 100% on that though. 🙂

According to UESP, from the little research I did, at least some of the Summerset refined paintings are lootable in containers from summerset

OK, these are the ones I am talking about, the ones that are not in Summerset but were in the other house I did not buy (if you don’t mind me copying from your post above):

I have gotten the other Summerset paintings either from chests there myself or from purchasing in guild traders.

I know a lot of what is mentioned on UESP also has a ledgermain option that is often not mentioned, but the only paintings I am aware of that are stolen are the Velothi Triptyches and the rare Velothi Paintings. That site is an incredible valuable source I use often. I also have done quite a lot of stealing to get rare furnishing drops, like the brushes and pillows from Elsweyr, and more recently the wine related furnishings from West Weald. The paintings above predate all that, so they must be from base game zones, which is why I question whether they drop there at all, considering my bank is full of all of the other paintings that drop, like the Craglorn crags, the one from Reapers March, the Rift, the Sturdy ones, etc. In fact, since they started putting dlc painting drops in chests (I think it started with Elsweyr). I have tried to obtain all of the paintings from that particular zone.

If these paintings above are only obtained from buying a house, or from a Crown furnishing pack, then they would be bound because they are Crown furnishings.

So maybe they drop on PC but I have never seen them on PS NA.

I have to admit I don't buy furnishings from the crown store, so I have no clue about them, but I thought you could gift some crown store furnishings? Maybe that is why they aren't bound?

Then again it might just be an oversight.

I looked through the furnishings listed under crime and I did see some Velothi Paintings from vvardenfall, but none of the refined paintings.

Maybe they were meant to drop through crime but were just never added to the loot tables.

I did see that I am going to have to go to orthern Elsweyr because I saw some nice furnishings I want that are dropped from stealing there.

'Painting of Summerset Coast, Refined' can be found unbound (and sold via guild traders) because it is one of the possible rewards for completing the 'The Perils of Art' quest in Summerset.

Yes, those paintings could be gifted from either a furnishing pack or directly from the housing editor, I believe. I could purchase them with crowns as well, but if they are sellable then I would like to buy them with gold. It’s sort of a fact-finding mission at this point.

I would like to know if any players have found the paintings in my list above from overland drop sources. I was able to pull up TTC here to see if Painting of a Desert, Refined was listed anywhere for sale in traders and it came up with no results, whereas An Alfiq in Skingrad Painting did show results.

Either those paintings are supposed to drop and aren’t, or it is an error to have them in the search for guild traders.

Painting of College of the Sapiarchs, Refined
Painting of Monastery of Serene Harmony, Refined

so.... probably chests - because I don't buy anything from the housing editor....

Okay, I wasn't sure how it worked exactly for furnishing items.

As far as I know, I don't have any of the paintings, so I can't really help you there, but it is sounding like it is an error that they are able to be searched in the guild trader.

I personally would love it if they just plopped them into some loot tables for base game zones, but I love furnishings, even if I will never use them

Yeah, those are some of the Summerset ones. I have looted some of those from chests or bought them from traders.
