Should players be allowed to inspect gear and looted items from other players?

No, others should not be allowed to inspect us.

This is a common feature in other MMORPGs. For instance, EQ and WoW feature this. I’m not sure why ESO players are so opposed to such a basic idea.

Genuine question: How does the inspection feature exactly work in those games? How and under what circumstances can you view other people’s setups?

I can speak as a former Neverwinter Online player. Inspection was absolutely allowed there and you just had to target a player with the mouse, click and you had the "inspect" option. This way you could see everything about that player at any time. Having had this experience, I can say that it is much better the way things are in ESO.

I personally always share my build in group chat when I'm in a PUG vet trial for instance. Just to be sure the other heal doesn't wear the same. And even if somebody asks me what I wear I will reply. I'm fine with it :)

And there's not much to say to be honest. It's SOB/ROJO or SOB/PP/SPC 95% of the time :D

I'm 100% fine with Group Loot Notifier addon, especially since the API allows it. I wish it was an official part of the game, actually. You don't need to give away your loot to anyone, you can just say "sorry I bound/consumed it" like someone suggested here. Or just ignore the whispers, it's that easy. I like this addon as it's super useful for when I farm dungeon gear with friends who have all sets collected, so I can just ask them "oh hey you got piece x, can I have it?". Or if I have all sets and a friend needs my loot. I ignore the addon in PUG content, unless someone is giving away their loot, I'll ask them for a specific item.

However, when it comes to inspecting gear, it might be used to push elitism. It's quite different in ESO than in WoW or FFXIV and the likes where gear is basically just made of stats, while in ESO we have a million gear sets you can combine. Which means some players might exclude/kick another player who has non-meta sets in use... While it's possible to deal enough damage with non-meta sets as long as you can weave and know your rotation! I have a friend who does 100k+ dps with "crap" sets, so yeah... I can see it being a measure for who has actual buff sets on a support role, tho.

There are many shy, physically challenged and older people in this game.

They should not be inspected in any way by superior or greedy folk.

There are enough entitled people who yell at others who don't meet their expectations. They should not be enabled further.

MMO is a community experience. Social skills seem more of an issue here.

As I posted in the other thread:

I still do not find any definitive advantage to this mechanism while the privacy concerns are many. I do not care about how other games address this, we're here, in ESO.

A toggle would only involve more bullying and overbearing behaviour, so I for one do not support gear inspection.

An honest question: Has this solved the gatekeeping problem? I’m not being facetious. The workarounds developed by, e.g., some raiding guilds accomplish the same thing and require more from players. While it’s true that this is technically optional, as a console player this is far more frustrating to accomplish in practice.

An honest question: Has this solved the gatekeeping problem?.

"Solved"? No. It's impossible to "Solve" gatekeeping, people will always find ways to do it.

"Mitigated"? Yes. As many of the work around methods simply require evidence of performance rather than strict "Using specific meta setups" or other such nonsense (Like Gearscore in WoW)

Of course, the issue then shifts to employing these work arounds - Such as recording and sharing a parse to show your DPS. Which is not facilitated within the game itself and relies on mods (Thus is PC only)

Which would be a separate discussion in regards to implementing in-game parsing tools (Which would have some tangential connection to this thread whereby facilitating such things would mean more people adopt to use them for gatekeeping metrics which is one of the main issues with implementing even optional features... Accessibility means more people opt to utilize them - Which is one of the main reasons why most games don't innately have features like DPS meters)

Totally fair. Part of the issue is the mismatch between console “features” and PC features.

My favourite was the DPS in Bahsei/coral riptide. I was curious how they managed to cast abilities if they were playing their sets.

Remind me of healing in Pearls and MK ;)

    I'm indifferent.

I don't use loot addon because it puts too much useless mess in my chat. Don't mind others using it though.

As for gear, on PC we have logs. That's perfectly enough imo. Enabling logs on console would solve this and many other issues. Maybe in the future?
