Do attacks to damage shields count as "taking damage"?

For the Desert Rose armor set, I'm wondering if "taking damage" means health damage specifically, or just getting hit? Would desert rose not proc if I have a damage shield cast on myself?

It is very consistent.

If you are hit and the damage is fully blocked or fully absorbed by your shield and does not hit your health, it doesn't count as taking damage.

It only counts as taking damage if the hit reduces your health by any amount.

Went and tested the Desert rose in question by OP. I proc it through shields as well.

Normally yes, skills and sets that proc when you take damage do not activate if you have a shield.

That said, the behaviour of such is not always consistent. I'd suggest that if you have access to pts you test it there.

I explored this very question, at least for Almalexia's Mercy set, and it DOES proc on shields even if you do not lose hp.
Using sorc hardened ward.

If that happens with Almalexia's Mercy then it's a bug and you should report it.

If there is no health loss, then there is no damage taken. If your shield absorbs the total damage and no damage hits your health, then there is no damage taken.

It's been like that since ever.

So report the bug as Almalexia's Mercy should not be healing you since the proc condition is not met.

Lord warden procs through shields as well, that is 3/3 sets I have tested now.
For me it is clear that taking damage proc sets include shield damage.
