Possible issues with Windows Update KB5051987 [Unable to connect to server]

I was logged into the PC EU server and playing just fine sometime between 9 PM and 10 PM EST.

Then I logged out and tried to switch to the PC NA server so I could complete crafting, cards, and endeavors for February 12, but suddenly I am unable to connect.

At the moment I'm getting "The Launcher has detected a network error. [1:1:950:0]" even though my network seems to be fine and I have internet connectivity.

I've rebooted my computer, and even rebooted my modem, but am still having issues.

Note that after I get the error, I can still launch the game but it times out at the login screen: "LOGIN ERROR Connection to server timed out. Please try again later." and the bottom of the login screen says "Could not retrieve announcements."

But then the welcome text starts to scroll across the bottom of the screen, then after a bit it reverts back to "Could not retrieve announcements."

Is anyone else having trouble right now? It doesn't seem to be on my end, and everything else (browser, other games, etc.) works fine, but ESO will not connect.

So it isn't just me. My first thought was that there might be another DDoS attack going on. Another thought was that it might be the account services rather than the game server, since I was on PC EU just fine but then couldn't/can't log in after logging out and selecting the PC NA megaserver. And I can't get back into PC EU, either. It's like I was having no problems while I was already logged in, but after logging out I'm no longer able to connect to the account services.

I’m getting this same error with the launcher stating there was a network error. I was online earlier then took a break.

I don't know if this is helpful information or not, but when I tried to open my browser it went to the page that said my browser had been updated to the latest version (Edge), so apparently my system updated itself this evening. I usually keep Windows Update paused and run it only on denand every 2 weeks, then pause it again, but it seems I'd forgotten to pause it after I ran the update the other day. It's back on pause now.

I also got an error about OneDrive not being signed in, so I signed into OneDrive and it uploaded several hundred files to the cloud. I thought maybe that was the problem, so I tried getting in afterward but still cannot get in.

Then I thought I remembered that I'd deliberately turned off OneDrive's cloud synch a long time ago because-- if I remember correctly-- it was causing problems with ESO (something related to the settings file?). So I've paused OneDrive's cloud synch again and exited out of OneDrive, but it doesn't seem to make any difference-- I still get the same messages in the launcher.

Yeah I’m uninstalling a windows update I had earlier. I was able to login well after but now ESO and Fallout 76 are having issues

It had to be the windows update. Uninstalled it and I am able to access ESO and Fallout 76 again

I've just uninstalled the latest update as well-- KB5051987-- and am now able to get in okay.

It's odd, because the OS says that the update was installed yesterday, not today, and I was able to log in and play yesterday, last night, and earlier today, so I'm not sure why it would have suddenly started causing a problem tonight. But uninstalling it definitely seems to have resolved the issue, unless it was just a strange coincidence.

That update is a feature version update for Windows 11 and is not recommended by the Patch Lady, Susan Bradley, on the AskWoody site. It also can appear for installation on Windows 10 machines which it upgrades to Windows 11. You can follow advice on that site for running a program called InControl which prevents Microsoft from upgrading your feature version on both Windows 10 and 11.

No problems for me on win 10 after the update yesterday (just checked, it was KB5051974). I'm not ever moving to 11, so....

No, they write about an Attack on Windows PC and Server and that you should use Windows Update to install the latest Security patch (KB5051987).

Well, though I don't use Windows 11 for the most stupid and ridiculous reason (the awful right-click context menu), thank you for the heads-up

That was one of the things I checked before uninstalling the update. My firewalls were in place as usual, and ESO was set to be allowed through as usual, same as Steam and my other games.

I have a sneaking suspicion that it may have had something to do with OneDrive and ESO's settings file, based on the fact that I'd had OneDrive and its cloud-syncing feature turned off, but then they were apparently turned back on by Windows-- I guess by that update-- but if that was it then I'm not sure why the problem persisted even after I turned OneDrive and cloyd-syncing back off (and rebooted afterward).

In any case, uninstalling KB5051987 resolved the issue. I hope someone figures out how that update is causing problems and what to do to fix them without uninstalling the update, because I've read that it's an important security update and I'd rather have it installed than not. The fact that everything else seemed to be fine and only ESO was affected suggests that it had to do with something used exclusively by ESO, such as ESO's settings file or other files and processes.

I'm not having issues with win11,seems fine to me.I login to windows local, and don't use onedrive.I use shutup10 to turn off "features" that are privacy issues, and basically jsut leave on win update and windows authorization.I also tweak alot of things,so my pc is stable and fast.I also use explorerpatcher to make the menu and stuff back to like win10 and earlier.
