Maintenance for the week of December 22:
• NA megaservers for maintenance – December 22, 4:00AM EST (9:00 UTC) - 8:00AM EST (13:00 UTC)
• EU megaservers for maintenance – December 22, 4:00AM EST (9:00 UTC) - 8:00AM EST (13:00 UTC)

Once again, too much maintenance...

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: this game has WAY too much maintenance.

It's baffling to me how often this game gets taken down for maintenance, and how tons of bugs are still present in the game, some that have been around for quite some time now. It really does feel like maintenance is pointless. No other game I've ever played in my life goes through as much maintenance as ESO does. Yes, obviously, maintenance is required at some points, but honestly, what is going on with the devs that require the servers to go down nearly every week? Not to mention that we just had a very long and extended (with no warning until after it gets extended) maintenance not even 4 days ago. This is getting ridiculous. We're paying for a game that is constantly being taken down for many hours at a time, even days at some points. And when we can play, the game is still buggy and laggy.

Zos, please stop with the constant maintenance. kthxbye

Large game, vast ammounts of code, sometimes things go wrong. I get it's annoying but less maintenance isn't the answer you think it is.

On the opposite side, I'm glad there is maintenance to fix and improve things.

I love TESO but I don't depend on TESO to live, so if we need to have 4, 8 or 12 hours of maintenance, or a whole day, and then maintenance again because something still needs to be fixed or taken care of, then so be it.

I have a life and other things to do, it's not that I need to be here 24/7 to be able to breath and live.

The game is buggy and laggy so they shouldn't do the biweekly patch this week?

Not sure where this is coming from or why you need to spend so much time trying to convince me you have a life. Congrats. Also implying people being frustrated over constant maintenance means they don't have a life. lol

What I mean is that you don't need to worry about maintenance. Go do your things. The game is not going anywhere and will be back every time maintenance is over.

If the game goes into maintenance mode, it's because it's really needed.

I'm positive ZOS would do less maintenance if it was possible, so if they do x amount of maintenance, for x amount of hours, and then maintenance again, it is because it is really needed for that exact period of time.

So, we should stop questioning how much maintenance the game has, as it has the amount of maintenance that it needs.

I believe this is PlayStation Network maintenance. All online games routed through PlayStation for verification of online privileges are effected. Is it only ESO?

PlayStation isn't doing maintenance. Yes their servers are down, but it's not due to maintenance.

They could be updating log in permission for server access to limit the DOS attacks that I am sure increased after the 20 hour maintenance cycle that created a lot of lag and freezing. I am sure there is a bigger picture we are not seeing.

And it’s also got nothing to do with ESO.

Last week's long maintenance was for server maintenance.

According to wording above next week's is patch maintenance, a different thing isn't it?

Also scheduled to be a few hours shorter...... "scheduled" that is!! :D

(PSN is still down so... long post.)

    Background:

I started playing my first MMORPG games in January 2000. Yep, Y2K! The Big Three were all the rage at that time: EverQuest, Ultima Online and the much-loved Asheron's Call. They had abysmally poor graphics but generally wonderful game mechanics. I first had to play on dial-up. Yes, I said dial-up. If you had DSL you were an elite!

(Now of course I have a great PS5 and blazing fast fiber optic connection.)

I was an Alpha/Beta tester for The Lord of the Rings Online, and anyone who had an Asheron's Call account (me) got preferential status as a tester. I beta tested a lot in the old days.

I also played Anarchy Online, EverQuest 2, The Lord of the Rings Online, The Dark Age of Camelot (TESO's AvAvA (alliance) and central PvP "Cyrodiil" zone is based on DAOC's RvRvR (realm) and PvP "Frontier" zone), and other games.

The Elder Scrolls Online is a wonderful game which I have been playing for five and a half years with subscription.

Note: I did not say it was a perfect game, but nevertheless it is a very enjoyable game. And, by the way, it plays much much better with a PS5 and a very fast broadband connection. I do not experience the lag or crashes that other players regularly complain of.

    Point:

Every one of the MMORPGs that I have played have had regular and sometimes frequent and oftentimes weekly maintenance periods. That is actually considered normal and not excessive. All MMORPGs have expansions, additions, and maintenance. It goes with the territory. And they all require frequent maintenance. And if they did not do regular maintenance I would be very very surprised.

I don't believe the game has "way too much" maintenance. I believe that it has the maintenance that it requires. So does my car by the way.

I do believe however that the game does have some persistent bugs that do require attention and ZOS is signaling that they are going to be working on that problem area.

With U45 coming I'm sure they have to push some stuff to live to prep for that. It's not uncommon for MMOs to go down for maintenance like this...

Personally, I don't view this as an issue. I actually wish they had more frequent maintenance. Fix things quicker and push out shorter maintenances. Like 1 hour blips here and there (obviously not at prime time).

Remember when they were weekly patches? [Sigh] I miss those days!

Okay, maybe not. But I do think that sometimes it helps for them to just turn their computers off and then back on again, even if there are no updates to the client side of things.

Oh yes, how dare the developers of a massive, always-online MMORPG perform regular maintenance to keep the game running? The audacity! Clearly, they should just let the servers rot, let exploits run wild, and allow game-breaking bugs to fester indefinitely—all in the name of "less maintenance."

You claim no other game does this, which is hilarious. Every online game, especially MMOs, has frequent maintenance. World of Warcraft? Weekly. Final Fantasy XIV? Regularly scheduled. Destiny 2? Constant patches and downtime. The difference? ESO actually tells you when it’s happening.

And then there’s the real kicker: complaining that bugs still exist after maintenance, as if game development is just flipping a magic switch to make everything perfect. Yeah, let’s just fix all the bugs at once and never touch the servers again—why didn’t the devs think of that?

Honestly, this whole argument boils down to wanting a complex, online, ever-changing game to just… never need upkeep. That’s like complaining that your car needs oil changes or that roads need repair. It’s not ridiculous that ESO has maintenance—it’s ridiculous to expect it not to.
