Lock picking questions

As I am hard of hearing I can not hear the audio chirp my friend told me helped him a lot I can see the wiggle and find it takes me 2trys at each tumbler as I am not fast enough to react the first try due to some other health problems
this is expensive in picks and the time required means that I have no chance at any but the Easy locks with their longer time for picking is there a skill that helps with forcing chances?
If it matters I play the mac client.

When you find a chest, and are trying to pick the lock, I believe that you can press "R" and it will try to force the lock open. It will tell you the chance of this working. I haven't used it yet, myself, since I can usually pick it pretty well. But you might want to try that out.

I think the difficulty of the chest is based on the zone you're in and level you're at. So if you can do Simple at least with ease, you might just skip the others until you're higher character level.

Yes but I have had it work only on those chests where my multipick method works which is why I asked about skills that would improve chances with forcing

I found trying to click just before I know the wobble will occur (from a previous try) works best
    I lyke not this quill.

I cannot hear the the audio clues either, so I learned to not rely on them. I use the visual clues only. As soon as the tumbler starts to wiggle I let go. This took a little bit of practice but I find now that I am able to pick almost every lock that I come into contact with unless I run out of time. And breaking lockpicks has declined so much that I ended up with nearly 2 full stacks of 100 each stack in my bags and had to start destroying one of the stacks just to keep space for looting.

Saw another post from someone having issues similar to this. Some people suggested holding down the LMB to use the pick and when you think it is time to release hitting the RMB instead. They had a better reaction time clicking the RMB then just releasing the LMB and went through less lockpicks. Might want to give that a try and see if it works for you.

Crumpy that is exactly what I do now as my reaction time is not fast enough the first time on most tumblers esp the stronger locks with the extra time pressure

about your space issue. If your holding all your crafting material in your bag. Deposit them in your bank. You'll still be able to use them at crafting stations

No autopilot skill. It is a twitch game. It does get easier over time. The cylinders only have like 4 or 5 positions each, and eventually you'll be able to "see" them instinctively. Keep trying. (If you are hard of hearing, turn the souund way up...but the visual cues are enough for me. I can do it with the sound off just as well)

As for picks...I have found there are waaaay more picks in the game world than I need. Spend some time going through people's stuff in houses...it seems like in ESO every single citizen is required by law to keep at least a dozen lockpicks in their house at all times. Seriously, they are everywhere. I stopped even bothering to steal them because I have so many.

Thanks SS on the skill question I was wondering if there was anything that improved the chances of forcing a lock... Twitch is right I am just not fast enough to catch tumblers the first time so I mark the spot and catch it the next time with the locks with lots of time this woks ok and I can stay ahead of the lock pick loss rate but not if I try to do the faster chests.

Nooooo...you definitely cannot "force" a lock. Even in real life you can't do that. The tumblers have to be teased into a specific position.

The game actually does a great job of simulating how real-life lock picking works. Doing it in the real world is very very similar. The thingie at the bottom of the front of the lock is there to put pressure on the cylinder so that when the tumblers "catch" friction will hold them in place.

Thanks for the idea I will give it a try

If you watch carefully it usually makes a slight dip to one side or the other just before it starts wiggling. At that point you can release it. And I've never heard any chirping ... hmm. oh well must be me.

Best way I've found is to press the right mouse button to push the pin down, keeping it pressed, click the left mouse button. If you press the left button in the wrong place, it instantly starts pushing the pin down again saving you valuable time.

Whether the above quote does the same thing and you can do it either way round, I'm not sure. Apologies if it is, just saying how I do it.

i never listen for that cue, didnt even know about it. I just watch for the first wiggle then its ready to be set. in time you will gain mastery over it, make sure you dont have a laggy mouse too.
