Old Life quests weren’t added until 2020, at which point we had all mounted speed boosts presently in game except Gifted Rider (10% additive with Major Gallop and then multiplicative with everything else).
(I’m forgetting if CP 1.0 had an equivalent. Windrunning was much less, iirc, also did movement speed, and I never tested whether it behaved the same way anyhow.)

Huh, for the life of me I don't know why I remember that one wrong. I could have sworn it's always been there.

I mostly remember it was added later only because I remember people commenting when they found the shrines themselves added to the game before the event announcement about them was released. It’s always neat to me when people discover things like that.

I remember the Old Life Remembrance was added in 2020 because I actually cried a little. 2020 was a rough year for my family and we lost multiple people due to the pandemic. It was....such a touching and heartfelt addition to the game at the time. And it feels really poignant too whenever Varen shows up now too, as we have lost his VA IRL. This is just such a beautifully done quest.
This would be absolutely amazing. Kind of wish they'd do the same thing for Trait research. Keep the scrolls for Mount leveling and Trait research for people who are richer irl than in-game and stuff, but give us the ability to circumvent annoying timers by paying with both in-game and irl currency. The mount training really should be changed so that it is no longer on cooldown, but at an escalating cost such as the bank space and bag merchant.
a bunch of us just did the one in Stonefalls and on my way back met a couple of 'em that hadn't even made it past halfway. lol.
Imagine being a new player at a low level with no access to any speed boosts and having to go through this tedium!

What tedium? When I played ESO for the first time, I was enjoying the new scenery so much I didn't even notice my mounts were slow or that I had to search for wayshrines to use them for the first time.a bunch of us just did the one in Stonefalls and on my way back met a couple of 'em that hadn't even made it past halfway. lol.

It's always been like it I'm afraid. Ultima Online in the 1990s, the GMs would put on big story events, not that you could see the story as half the people there would be spamming the screen with "give me free event item mrmgmrmg!" Couldn't wait for the GM to tell the story, had to naff up the screen for everyone. Blargh. I'm gonna go outside and shout at a cloud.
