Emergency Server Power Solutions: A Certified Electrician’s Rustic Vision

Dear ESO Team,

First off, I want to acknowledge the incredible work you all do to keep Tamriel running. As a certified electrician, I understand that maintaining server uptime is no easy feat, especially when the power decides to go on its own adventure. That said, I’d like to offer a lighthearted, practical (and somewhat satirical) suggestion to help tackle these outages.

The solution? Bring in the fuel-powered mini generators—the kind often used to power smallworkshops. Here’s how it could work:

Deploy the Workshop-Tech Backup Plan
With a fleet of reliable mini generators (which, as an electrician, I can confirm are surprisingly resilient), you’d have an emergency power supply robust enough to handle critical server operations. From cooling systems to network gear, these little marvels are more than capable of stepping up when the main grid lets you down.

Server Room Chic: Rustic Edition
Why stop at functionality? Enclose the generators in Skyrim-inspired workshops for maximum immersion. Picture the server racks surrounded by timber walls, a hay bale or two, and maybe even a decorative goat. If nothing else, it’d make for the most charming data center in the industry.

Expertly Wired, Naturally
Naturally, you’ll want the generators wired into an automatic transfer switch for seamless failover. That way, when the local power grid decides to FUS RO DAH itself offline, your servers keep humming like the bards at the Winking Skeever.

The PR Bonus
Let’s be honest, the tagline writes itself: “ESO: Now Powered by mini-Generator Energy and Rustic Reliability for the Modern Adventurer.” It’d be the perfect mix of humor and ingenuity, and I’m sure the community would appreciate the nod to the series’ roots.

Until then, I’ll be waiting patiently to log back into Tamriel, ready to slay dragons, close portals, and possibly repair a circuit or two if needed.

Yours in solidarity, silliness, and professionalism,

Waseem

Sounds like the power monitoring system thought there was a fire or a flood in which case the system is programed to cut power rather than switch to back up for safety reasons.
A normal AC mains failure would transfer power to generator or battery backup.

The updates suggest backup power was not provided by design. So this isn't something they need help with.

They have backup power. That wasn't the problem. My understanding is the problem was a failsafe for a different kind of emergency that was triggered when it shouldn't have been that cut both main and backup power.

When an entire DC goes down for any reason, it's going to take some time to fix. After the DC is up, then the customers have to carefully inspect the integrity of their servers and data before going live again; failing to do so could result in an even greater problem that necessitates something like a rollback.

ZOS' communications about the issue said it had something do do with a system response to fire and flood.

Who is the lord of fire and flood? Mehrunes Dagon.

I think this server issue may be more serious than they're letting on. :o

It happens. Sometimes a PSU in the 'farm' decides to let out the magic smoke (Or fire) and trips the Sprinklers/Suppression system (Depending on the DC, i've seen some still use sprinklers. . .) as a result, an entire section of that facility gets damaged, and auditors have to come in and verify the building is safe to power back up and resume operations. this takes hours. At best, workloads get migrated to another cluster of hosts not affected, At worst, Entire racks of computers get trashed by the emergency suppression systems and a manual rebuild is required.

On the down side, expect this to happen more often as the industry continues to shoehorn AI detection in to everything, which is hilariously unreliable at best, but when have Management of anything ever listed to the voice of reason over the snake oil salesman.

Whatever causes a power outage can also cause an outage for the Server's ISP. A backup gen for the Server won't do much if there's no Internet connection.

If there was an actual Oblivion portal event in the datacenters, some downtime would be understandable. And naturally it would be challenging to maintain an internet connection to a server that has been taken to the Deadlands.
