More ESO Toggles | Make Block a toggle

Block should probably receive a toggle. The toggled nature should make the activation feel significantly smoother to weave for new players while the disabling of Stamina Recovery while moving should stomp out the ability to remain perpetually in motion and tank without serious investment and strategic use. In addition to this, adding a small benefit for activating the skill in PvE situations, should give the usual bonus damage players have come to expect when fighting dungeon monsters or npcs. The goal is not to outright carry damage in PvE, but rather form a foundation to potentially build off of by allowing a way to easier track when players utilize parts of their toolkit in future iterative work.

Essentially looking at the opportunity costs of block and trying to create a more accessible skill for any build, while simultaneously ensuring there are more stark costs associated with maintaining block.

Before reading your post, I was going to make a silly comment about how this sort of change is just a flat no.

After having read the post, I'm just confused as to what you're even saying at all. I've read through twice and I still don't understand. Can you rephrase this post?

I personally don't like toggle skills. I prefer skills that have a set duration or are active while holding the button.

Since almost no skills in the game are a toggle, I don’t think blocking being a toggle would be intuitive. It might help with hand stress on tanks so from a medical perspective it could be nice.

While the default block should be the current version (non-toggle), which is more intuitive and responsive, it would be accessible to have a toggle for it as a non-default option. However, it could lead to confusion as to whether it successfully toggled on or not.

Assuming I'm understanding correctly that the request is for an option to hit a button, and have block active without holding the button, until you hit the button again. Some games have toggles for things like Sprint (Skyrim) or Walk/Run (ESO) or sneak (both), without having to hold it. And it's easier for some people or just preferred. I could see it being harder to develop and bugfix than it might seem.

    Favorite Foods and Potions
    https://media.giphy.com/media/3otPoTggaYFNd1FdAI/giphy.gif
    • Parse Food for PvE:(DPS) Ghastly Eye Bowl (increases Max Magicka by 4592 and Magicka Recovery by 459 for 2 hours).
    • Gold/Purple Food for Sorc PvP and Meme Tanking:(PvP) Clockwork Citrus Filet (increases Max Health by 3326, Health Recovery by 406 [useful if stage 1 vampire], Max Magicka by 3080, and Magicka Recovery by 338 for 2 hours). Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

I personally would like to see a toggle option for blocking, mainly for accessibility reasons, as some players may have trouble holding a key or button down anyways.

Keep in mind, though, most of those players should already have peripherals with software that allow them to configure toggle-keys on any key and button they want.

Before making it a toggle, make it work, it would be a huge improvement to the game.

Good idea. While we are at it, I think streak should be converted to a toggle too. Replace ramping cost with disabled mag recovery. It would be way better & provide smoother & easier gameplay. You would essentially have "warp speed" mode. You just "punch it" & before you know it, you are at another keep. Of course it would have a drawback - no mag recovery while it is toggled "on".

Permablocking still works great for basic tanking, which is more than what you'd find in a group pug anyways. If it turns into a "bad habit", well, skill issue.

The point is in having it as an accessibility option for people who have trouble holding buttons down for even short periods of time. It may not be your concern, but having that option would make a world of difference to anybody who do suffer from physical ailments, and it's such an easy change for the devs to implement.

If one's hand is getting cramped holding down the rmb, perhaps they may consider doing it less often!

I don't like toggles. I dislike the toggle added to cloak. I've played long enough to remember when ZOS first seemed to decide toggles were a bad idea.

If block was made into a toggle for everyone as opposed to it being an accessibility setting, then cases where you cannot permablock become harder (click button twice instead of once) and bashing becomes more difficult for everyone unless bash is rebound to another key.

You're weaving Block? I don't really understand. And even if you are weaving Block, how does making it a toggle benefit that? You'd have to click twice every time instead of just once.

The idea of toggling Block as an accessibility option isn't a bad one, but your rationale is confusing to me.

Okay, first of all, basic tanking is 1. taunt key enemies and 2. survive. There's plenty more than simply just gear sets that people can use to achieve that simple goal of survival while holding aggro on dangerous enemies, and the easiest of them all is simply holding block. When a player is trying to tank, if they do not understand an encounter and do not wish to die to an attack that might kill them, they can simply just hold block. It is an accessible introduction to the role, and by gatekeeping this core mechanic, you are contributing nothing to the new player experience.

Secondly, toggle-inputs is not "automation of game mechanics". Plenty of games have toggle-inputs for core mechanics like sprinting and aiming down sights; ESO has toggle-inputs for crouching and running forwards (auto-run). None of these are "automation"; a state change is still being triggered by just one input, and nothing inherently different to normal gameplay is being sent to the servers.

I am not gatekeeping anything, I am not the one making decisions here... I am just disagreeing with your assumption that an ability to hold block passively for a longer periods of time is a good learning tool for tanks. Simply because my experience teaches me otherwise. Tanks that tend to permablock from the start usually struggle later.

There are very few fights where you need to block for a signifgicant period of time without interruption (Lord Falgraven would be a good example). There are much more fights where it won't be a good solution.
In normal content (I am assuming group content, since we're discussing tanks) dangerous attacks are usually the heavies. If you're having trouble to recognize them coming, try some solo content first. Solo arenas or soloing world bossess can actually teach you a ton about how to recognize dangerous incomings.
