I have gotten that on rare occasions, but not very frequently. I never do the repair, just close it and then it seems to work just fine the next time.

My theory is that it's got something to do with the internet connection-- that the launcher is trying to do something in the background while you're playing the game, such as load data for those news announcements that it constantly cycles through, but for whatever reason it has trouble loading something and throws up that error (which you then don't see until you log out of the game).

You can actually close the launcher once you've launched the game; there's no need to keep it up and running in the background. In fact, I think someone in the forums once mentioned that ZOS actually recommends closing the launcher after launching the game if you're getting certain kinds of errors, to see if that helps.

As an aside, the other night I was playing ESO when the audio suddenly cut out for a second, and simultaneously my iPad and iPhone both dinged with a notification that one of the streamers I follow on Twitch just went live. The audio came back right after those notifications. That really drove home to me that there are a lot of things going on in the background that could be impacting ESO's internet connection-- not just other processes going on in the background on my computer (such as the ESO launcher loading and displaying its carousel of news announcements), but also apps on my various other devices which are downloading data or receiving "push" notifications.

Yup, it is the launcher that is bugged. If you get this error when starting the launcher, you do have to repair. If you get this error after closing the game without any further issues, it is a bug you can just click away. Make sure which is which, because your files really could be corrupted if it is the former.

If it's the former, then before you do a lengthy repair, try going into the launcher settings, checking the option to remove any obsolete files the next time the launcher opens, clise the launcher, then reopen it. There might be one or more old files that can be safely removed.

Another thing I just thought of is that if you have the PTS enabled, you can sometimes get slowdowns in the live game, as well as error messages from the launcher, if the launcher is trying to download and apply an update for the PTS. You might want to check whether the launcher is dowloading a PTS update while you're playing ESO, and if it is, pause that download until you've finished your ESO session.

i did remove obsolete files. but at any rate, sounds like the launcher is sort of bugged, and sounds like a good idea to close it after starting the game (or just ignoring the pop-up)
