Currently I cannot progress beyond the stage "Find the release lever in the guardian's skull"; nobody in my party could - ran it twice to couble check (abandoning and retaking quest).

did you complete the task described in the quest? what happened? what didn't happen?
"I cannot progres" says nothing about it.

What someone in another thread stated a week or more ago was that they could not interact with the switch that's behind the Unstable Construct.

I don't know if that's what this thread is about, but that switch can be interacted with only if the switch at the beginning of that corridor is thrown first, so that would be one thing to check.

If that first switch did get thrown, it might be some kind of desync after the fight with the Unstable Construct which is keeping you from being able to interact with the switch. Try roll-dodging several times to see if that resyncs the game.

When you throw the switch behind the Unstable Construct, it should open a nearby side door to a little room where the release valve is, which must be thrown to unlock the door that's behind Tremorscale.

If you're talking about a different switch, what is it?

I could also not interact with the switch after the boss in the steam corridor; I cannot recall if switches were pulled appropriately.

Either way, the switch order should not matter and needs a fix for sure.

The order of the switches does matter, because the dungeon is designed such that you cannot activate a switch until you've activated the one before that, and there's a correct order to activating them because it's sort of like a puzzle. If you don't like it, go complain to the Dwemer who designed it. :D

Seriously, though, it can be confusing if you haven't done the dungeon a few times before. I remember being able to do it the first time I soloed the dungeon and was doing the quest, but the next few times I had trouble with it because I had forgotten the correct order. But now I never have trouble with it because I've done it so much.

Really, there's no chance of confusion until you reach the area where Tremorscale is, because you can't even get through the door that leads to that area until you've thrown the switch behind the assassin bug boss. You might miss that boss because the door is sort of hidden around to the left and you might be tempted to just run down the stairs instead, but when you can't get through the door it should force you to go back to find that first switch.

Once you get to where Tremorscale is, go left to where the door to the Unstable Construct is instead of fighting Tremorscale, and kill all of the lions so you can go through that door. Throw the switch at the beginning of that corridor, which turns off the steam for a moment, although it starts to alternate between being off and on, so you'll need to time your passage through the corridor to avoid getting hit and killed by the steam. That second switch (at the beginning of the corridor) is hard to skip, as the steam will blast fulltime unless you activate the switch, making it nearly impossible to make it through the corridor alive.

Then activate the third switch at the end of the corridor, behind the Unstable Construct, which opens a door to the right where the fourth switch is. Activating that fourth switch will unlock the door behind Tremorscale. I always like to go left after leaving the corridor so I can kill the two smaller duneracers before Tremorscale, then I pass unmolested between Tremorscale (who is facing in the other direction and doesn't see me and attack) and the now-unlocked door so I can kill the assassin beetles before offing Tremorscale.

Nah you can press a switch too few; if you skip the one before the steam, you can still press the one behind the boss. Happens in groups when a player rushes ahead when others have the quest.

Many instance 'bugs' are either other things not done, or moving on with hidden aggro from something that was outrun.

Volenfell, for sure, is the dungeon most likely to win "Award for instance where players wait for a door to be active before one person realises that they actually need to be somewhere else". It' a little confusing, but a fun one.

I recently tried to skip each of the switches to see what could be skipped, and I could not interact with the switch behind the Unstable Construct until I had thrown the switch at the beginning of the corridor.

I tried to go through the corridor without throwing the first switch, but died from the steam (which will be constant if you don't throw the switch), so after I rezzed I went through the rest of the corridor while still immaterial, killed the Unstable Construct and everything else, but the switch behind the Unstable Construct could not be interacted with. I had to go back to throw the first switch to proceed further.

    Update: this happened again.

I would love for the levers to not be a necessity in the righ torder; I was not in the right room when somebody rushed ahead: no finished quest.

Still bugged. This happens when someone else (not doing the quest) use the skull lever.

Can confirm the Volenfell quest has been bugged on multiple new characters I've ran through. If you're not the one to pull the levers toward the end of the Dungeon it won't update the quest and you can't finish it. You have to just abandon the quest.

I think this hits the nail on the head.

I was running this dungeon with my 2 new arcanists to get the skill point, and I noticed that if someone would run ahead of me and activate the lever that unlocks Tremorscale's door (typically someone with high CP running fast for a completion of a dungeon they did 100s of times), then the quest would bug out even though we could continue the dungeon until after killing the last boss - the orb just could not be interacted with at the end.
This did not happen when I ran ahead and activated that switch myself while on the quest - and I noticed that others on the quest would them be able to turn in and get their completion too.

Same problem 4 tries in a row. Maybe need to ask that I activate the lever and hope others are OK with that.

Yep. This is the issue. If someone who doesn't have the quest flips the switch then everyone who does have the quest will be unable to complete it. It's a super annoying bug thats been in the game forever but definitely still needs to be fixed

This is still happening, still not getting quest credit for pulling the lever by someone else.

Please fix this as apparently it's been months.
