Atoll of Immolation should tell which zone you're in

When you enter the Atoll through Blackwood, it's different than entering through The Deadlands. Yet, I can't find an easy way to tell how you entered through the portal. Sometimes you may have traveled to it through a group of guildmates, or simply forgot.

Maybe I'm not seeing something upon entering, but I think the only difference between entering from Blackwood or the Deadlands is some of the loot in the final chest (different antiquity leads, and coming in through a Deadlands portal can get you an Annihilarch's Chosen chapter). Beyond that, it's the same five or so outer-ring bosses, the same inner-ring boss, the same hidden boss, and the same group event boss.
I'm fresh out of outrage, but I could muster up some amused annoyance if required.

I think that when I open the map on PS5, and expand out, it shows me the zone that the entrance portal is in (Blackwood or Deadlands). Kind of like if you are in a delve and open the map and expand out, you see the zone that the delve is in.

    Same.

I learned my lesson back when the Annihilarch's Chosen motif was released.

I ported to someone who was in the Atoll of Immolation, spent three hours there despairing because the 'daily page' wouldn't drop.

What did drop eventually was the penny, when I realised that I was getting Blackwood overland sets from the chest.

Arguably my fault for not paying attention, but also a testament to how thoughtful the design of the game is when one has no way to tell where one is 'at a glance' and thinks that three hours of doing the same thing over and over every 5 minutes for a daily drop is somehow 'just RNG things'.

I'll have to test it again, but last time I tried this after porting to a guildmate, I believe it always showed Blackwood. They had said that the entered through the Deadlands but when I got there it said Blackwood when I zoomed the map. Maybe it was a visual bug or the guildmate was mistaken, IDK.

What I want to know is, why are Oblivion portals opening throughout the Deadlands? I thought the Deadlands were Mehrunes Dagon's domain within Oblivion? Is he invading his own domai

Yeah, like a flag or variable that's used to select which overland sets and motifs should drop?

LOL, I thought I had deleted that draft the other day. :) I ended up assuming that they're just part of his "practice runs," like armies conducting "war games" within their own nations.

Have you ever been so angry you invaded yourself just to show everyone who's the boss? Or maybe squatted in your own living room to protest against the high cost of housing? All very relatable.

Dagonic eccentricities apart, it'd be helpful for some sort of identification on the zone's name regarding the point of entry. Something as simple and (hopefully) hard to bug as (BW) for Blackwood and (DL) for Deadlands.

they are the same map but entirely different instances

on PC the beam me up addon shows both as separate instances if you have guildies in both, and can hover over the instance name to see if its the deadlands or blackwood instance

i know this doesnt help console, and i also find it really nonsensical that they are the same name and same map with no differing features except the possible drops

Yeah, at the time they said (probably on an ESO Live) that Dagon was basically training his own forces to keep them on their toes.

Also +1 to making it clearer which type of instance you're in.

Incidentally, you can park a character in the Atoll and log out and in and they'll stay in the same location. I had an alt camped there to farm Annihilarch's Chosen motifs for a while.

This is why it can be easy to forget right now with the endeavors. I have an alt parked there now because of the endeavor theme.

One way to tell the difference, is the background music heard in the Atoll of Immolation. If you are in the Blackwood version, then you'd hear Deadlands Suite from the Blackwood OST. In the Deadlands version, there's a currently unreleased music track (which would probably be added to a future Music of Tamriel OST album).

    Both music tracks:

From the UESP page, which was clarified by Rich Lambert in an ESO livestream (check it at 32:25 https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1164741006?)
While Blackwood is a target for conquest, the forces from the Atoll also invade the greater Deadlands to keep Mehrunes Dagon's followers in great fighting condition by keeping them on their toes.

With so many of us parked here because of the endeavors, I think it's a good reminder that we need a better way to tell where we are. Some people may think their RNG is bad when they're actually simply in the wrong version of the portal for what they want.

I entered an Atoll of Immolation through a portal in Blackwood. While I was in there I was able to back the map up to the Blackwood zone.

But when I entered an Atoll of Immolation through a portal in the Deadlands and backed the map up, it showed the Blackwood zone instead of the Deadlands.

I know it was really in the Deadlands because my achievement for doing portals in the Deadlands was advancing. So why doesn't the map back up to the Deadlands?

It is very inaccurate and confusing.

Because map zoom out was never meant to deal with one location being a sub part of two separate places. So it doesnt handle it well.

Rare Fish Tracker addon (im sure other addons do as well) tell you the fish you're missing for that zone it is connected to. It would be nice to have some sort of marker/id to let you know before zoning in from a friend.
