The part in bold might be fun in PvP...

    Would be fun too.

How long has this been your wish list for? Sad if it's been for a long time.
Yup, and it will be here until ZOS does something - which means...

DW "rune"/spell and 1h &"rune"/spell are both classic ES concept niches.

If I was allowed to think big, I could imagine an implementation allowing both.

I reckon it must at least be on ZOS's radar- its one of the big iconic playstyles from Skyrim.

Crossbows are my top pick, but really all of these new weapons should be included. ESO has inexplicably lagged behind most other mmos in expanding its play styles.

Yeah I think at the very least Spears, 1H+Destruction and Crossbows should all happen and should have been things before the Arcanist. A Bard class or something more traditional should have been before the Arcanist too.

If they do them I’d like to see ZOS experiment with impact and make them feel less floaty. Maybe have hitstop animations on spears, different sounds for the armor type you’re hitting, reverberating explosions with destruction magic. Enemies reacting to being hit instead of being completely static would be a nice improvement.

I always took with issue with the Arcanist for one reason. Its theme. It's really odd to have a class entirely dedicated to one Daedric prince. What's next a Sheogorath class?

They already told us they won’t do new weapon types, because then they would feel obligated to add a style for it to all existing motifs.

But they also tell us they can’t do new classes and then launched the Arcanist…..

One Hand and Rune is the only realistic option as it requires no new styles. You wield a One-Handed weapon in your Mainhand, and a ball of magic in your Offhand.

Perhaps if you slot a Mainhand 1H weapon, you would by default instead be using One Hand and Rune as opposed to the current default that is One Hand and Shield.

Yup same problem. Wish we could get skill styles that change the theme entirely to spell tomes amd scrolls with regular destruction magic.

Spears and polearms, which are really the same family, polearms are derived from spears. And throughout history prior to the advent of firearms, the spear was the most widely used weapon family but it is missing from this game that is based on using weapons from before the advent of firearms.

2H Rune, 1H Rune, Alchemical Thrown Flasks, Unarmed, Bard/Instruments. Would not require motif styles. You could also argue that Battle Standards also would not need them. Although would be cool to have a flag representing each style in the game and its culture/sub culture.

None of these besides Unarmed and 1H/Rune can work imo. If they did any of these other options it wouldn’t really make sense for the Elder Scrolls series. 1H/Rune is just magic is left hand with a 1H in the right hand. The only other viable option would be Spears but then we run into the motif styles issue ZOS mentioned before.

Not saying stuff like flasks or standards aren’t cool, just not reasonable especially considering we can’t even get a proper chapter per year anymore.

Crossbows exist in Skyrim, so do spears/thrown weapons although Rieklings use them, no reason why someone taller and bigger can't use them, 2H rune exists in Skyrim and Oblivion. You can equip 2 spells at once and even dual cast! What do you mean it does not make sense for Elder Scrolls? I am certain I have seen NPCs use throwing flasks and battle standards.Sure, bard instruments maybe a bit too Dungeons and Dragons, although there are many instrument emotes in the game that play actual music. It's not too far-fetched.

Crossbows is an option too - it’s in the same boat as Spears. Although it’s a bit more awkward considering we “have” a crossbow via the Silver Bolts in the Fighter’s Guild skill line. 2H/Rune and 1H/Rune both have complications too though (which is why 1H/Rune was planned but never released).

2H/Rune doesn’t work because we can’t wield a Two-Handed weapon in one hand based on how ESO handles its character balance/itemization. 1H/Rune would work and serves any purpose that 2H/Rune could have had. But also you are losing a set bonus with 1H/Rune, unless they count Runes as an additional set bonus.

Dual Spells face the same issue as Unarmed, in that you’re now missing Set items. Maybe if 1H/Rune existed and the Rune portion was a Set item, we could wield Dual Runes? It’s not too far fetched. They’re not going to add anything though so it’s a waste to think too much on this tbh lol. But Dual Spells maybe could have been brought to life that way.

IMO adding more actual weapon types (like spears) to give us new Warrior-archetype attacks, and Spellcrafting to give us new Mage-archetype attacks, would’ve been the most fun. Oh, and more Staff elements to cover for Support-related stuff instead of shoving Support stuff onto an Ice Staff.

You're misunderstanding, when I say 2H rune I don't mean holding a giant axe or sword in one hand and holding a rune in the other. I mean having 2 runes in both hands, thus 2handed rune. You could for the sake of item set simplicity put it down as a staff or 2handed weapon in the slot UI, but visually it would be like holding 2 weapons, 2 runes. For unarmed in ESO you could just for the sake of it make the weapon a special type of gauntlet or ring or some kinda knuckle duster. Or you could just have it on the UI as 2 fists and still give it a set bonus somehow on the UI but visually you hold nothing. I also agree that all elements should be for DPS not for tanking. It's really odd thematically to give a tank a battle staff when they're supposed to be tanky knights or buff barbarians.

Oh that makes more sense!! Yes I had thought you meant a 2H weapon like a Greatsword in combination with a Rune, def was a misunderstanding.

And adding gauntlets/wraps/brass knuckles of sorts could be interesting but just a bit too “out there” at least compared to stuff like Runes.

To be clear, all of it can be done. Just thinking on what is most realistic given the current game and how ZOS is putting in minimum possible effort into truly new stuff. Aka, Gold Road being the smallest chapter and Q3/Q4 being group finder updates instead of actual full-fledged DLCs.
