Question on parsing vs "real" combat

I see a lot of parsing videos and advertisements of builds that announce phenomenal dps far beyond 100k. I am still off that mark on the iron atro puppet that is ok.

What I would like to know from the professionals here:

I assume that it will be hard to achieve the same value in a real hard boss fight. What would be considered as good sustained dps in a trial boss fight?

Depends on the group supporting you. For dungeons, I like to see 40-50k+, trials you can be hitting a lot closer to that 100k+ mark if the supports are on point.

With good supports you can hit pretty high numbers.

"Good DPS" is subjective to the trial, the boss and what your group's goal is. 5 years ago, the average Immortal Redeemer group was hitting about 40k single target per person on Saint Olms for around a six minute clear. Now top end groups hit around 115k-130k per person for sub two minute clears.

Yandir and Vrol in Kyne;s Aegis are relatively stationary bosses and are practically training dummies. Top end groups can have DPS as high as 150k. However, the average group can easily deal with the bosses with 60k-70k DPS per person. Yes, the fights will be longer, but still more than doable.

Back in 2016 when vMoL came out, a 30k-35k parse on Rakkhat was considered top tier. Now top parses are breaking 160k on Rakkhat. And Rakkhat's difficulty is just the same as it was in 2016. Actually easier, since they nerfed his health in U35.

So again, it's subjective to your goals and group needs.

"Professional" parsers do a parse setup with food, pots, etc. It does not translate 100% over to live action. You will run different food, have to mitigate damage, do mechanics, keep a rotation that will get interrupted, and with the newer trials, focus different adds while avoiding damage from environmental or other sources. At the same time, you will have more group damage and sustain from synergies and support sets. In the end, if your actual damage is within 85% of your parse, you're fine.

A lot of times classes are advised to wear different gear and different skills for parsing, and different food. I have a build for each in the Armory.

I don’t agree with this practice of simulating top dps output but it is often required.

parsing helps with refining/practicing your combat rotation

you need "live" combat in order to practice doing your rotation while also under fire

theres a few different ways to practice though

"solo" practice, which is mostly good for arenas
"group" practice, essentially doing group dungeons, or at least having 1 tank/healer (can be the same player or 2 different players) with you to more easily simulate in a group

as a dps, in a trial group you can have a self heal as a kind of backup for if you need to run away from the healers (doing mechanics or something), but generally should be able to rely on healers for the majority of staying alive as long as you can position correctly

as noted by others in this thread, it also does vary a lot depending on the boss if you can just "parse" on it

yolnakriin from sunspire is a good example of a "parse" boss for the most part, its mostly stack and burn, vrol and yandir in kynes are also kind of just sit there and parse and occasionally turn and burn something else

i have my main house (grand topal hideaway) listed in the housing tours, it has multiple target dummies, scribing altar, and grandmaster stations (in progress being filled out), as well as almost every antiquity furnishing on display to preview them

    So..you parse 100k?
    That don't impress me much.
You got the DPS, but can you heal and such?
Don't get me wrong, I think you're alright?
But DPS won't keep me alive in the middle of a fight.
    That don't impress me much.

The role of support can make a massive difference in the numbers you hit - thats why most end game guilds ask for a log in addition to a parse, since it says way more about your performance.

Parsing is a great help to understand a build and train your Priorities/Rotation as a DD. The better you know that, the more time you have to concentrate on mechanics and positioning during a fight.

comparing your own parses to see progress and comparing with other parses to find out what you might do wrong, like

do i have the same skills in my top damage like a pro parser
how often do they use a specific skill (some are for example only in the bar for buffs and not used at all)
    and so on

So parsing is a very good way to show single target damage potential of a build - thats why they use it to advertise their builds - real combat is a different story but not a totally different one.

I'm def no pro, but download eso logs and keep track of where you are compared to your group. Are you the one doing all the running around for mechs, are you dying, are you resing. There are many factors, to be honest I haven't parsed for two or three years now probably. I don't know what my number is at but in my normal groups I am usually in the middle on non arc and towards mid-top on arc. Supports do make a big difference, solid tanks that don't die will make a night and day difference.
