What is this mark in the upper right corner of the map?

I just noticed on the world map in the upper right corner there is some kind of octopus looking thing there. Is that new? Either way, what do you think it represents?

    I think it's a deep sea creature.

It has always been there (or at least for years). It's just decoration, like some old rl maps had it.

It's always been there, and like the other sea monsters on the map, it's mostly there for flavor.

However, there is a strong possibility it is meant to represent this particular sea monster since it's located north of Northpoint

I apologize for that, Fluffy got out of his tank again. Don't worry, once he capsizes a few ships and munches on a few sailors, he'll come home and curl up on the couch. He's an old softie, really.

Yep, it's a kraken. Otherwise known as a giant squid.

Here be sea beasts. A frequent feature of medieval nautical maps that found itself common place in the fantasy genre.

Nirn has all sorts of giant creatures inhabiting the Oceans, you'll notice there's a Serpent in the waters near north Summerset I believe, and another off the East coast of Tamriel. I assumed, Lore wise, the Map of Tamriel has them as indicators or warnings from reports spread by sea monster attack survivors.

And from what little under water content ZOS has given us so far, I'm inclined to believe my theory.

Personally when opening the map it always reminds me of those old year 1600-1700 handwritten treasure maps, even colorwise. Which often had a symbol on it, to show those following the map that there would be danger ahead.

Atleast that is how I see it, as ESO has no computer or anything like that to generate the map. So it must be a handwritten one.
