reagent positioning

Im starting out looking at all alchemy combinations, going one by one. So for example I put bugloss in first slot then go through all the combinations that make valid potions then all the poisons. The problem is when I go to add 2nd reagent it sometimes falls in slot 2 but sometimes it falls in slot 1 replacing the bugloss and screwing with my combos. So that means I have to go back up and put bugloss back in. Why doesnt the new reagent added fall into the same slot always? It seems random.
to show what I mean - say bugloss is reagent 1, Ill do
1 2
1 3
1 4 then it goes
5 4 so thats not right.
I wanted 1 5 so I gotta fix that

Is there a trick to making it easier?

nm I figured it out. I guess I just need to clear the one I want to replace before I add the new reagent.

Yes, that has tripped me up-- and others, I'm sure-- many times in the past.

Also, if you have the passive unlocked that lets you use 3 ingredients, selecting another ingredient without having cleared the 2nd ingredient will put the new ingredient in the 3rd slot (assuming it was empty) rather than replacing the old 2nd ingredient with the new ingredient. So it will become even more important to clear an unwanted ingredient from its slot before selecting a new ingredient once you've unlocked that passive.
