Base Game Broken Storylines: Glenumbra and Stonefalls

So, there are at least two or three places where the Base Game zone storylines can be broken in mid-zone leaving you with no clue what to do next, and no "Zone Story" quest to pick up on.

(1) GLENUMBRA - PART 1.

So you've just arrived in Daggerfall. You've done Stros M'Kai and Betnikh. Both of which are pretty small and linear, although each starts with "three things that you can do in any order", followed by a finale that happens once you've done the first three. You've delivered the petition from Betnikh, to join the Covenant under the Orcish banner...

...And then, nothing. You're wandering around in Daggerfall. With nothing to do. No main quests, no pointers... Except, if you happen to wander into the right part of town, you start getting harassed by a stray dog. That stray dog inexplicably has a Zone Story arrow over its head. In fact, it leads to a chain of events that leads to the assassination attempt on King Casimir. But it really doesn't make sense: Sir Lanis Shaldon was your last contact with the Zone Story, but when you left him behind, *at that moment* there was nothing to do, nowhere to point, no indication that you'd even find the next thing in Daggerfall at all. And if you don't happen to walk near Giblets's roaming zone, you don't pick up the next bit of the quest.

The quest is also started if you walk too near the corpse of Roy, in the river, which is where Giblets leads you to. I would suggest that Lanis Shaldon himself should ask you to investigate a recent murder, and direct you to the corpse... if you don't get the quest *from him* you could then pick it up from Giblets (or, from Lanis again if you go back to him).

(2) GLENUMBRA - PART 2.

And when you have saved the life of King Casimir (after being randomly pointed to that quest by a stray dog)... Again there's no clue where to go next. In the ORIGINAL design, there was a person standing outside Daggerfall Castle - Babineaux Redain, presumably the wife or sister of Bernard Redain who can be found at the bridge to the east some way outside Daggerfall - who had a Zone Story quest arrow over her head, and pointed you to the next quest in Zone Story sequence, "The Turning of the Trees" which leads to your dealings with the Beldama Wyrd. You could, of course, bypass her and head out the gate (when she existed - now she doesn't exist, you have to leave Daggerfall not knowing in which direction you should be going) - and *if you walk far enough east and south without turning north* you run into Bernard Redain, who also gives you the quest: if you pass him and keep going, you might get it from Wyress Helene: but if you go out the gate and then turn north, not towards Deleyn's Mill at all, then you're suddenly without a story, without direction.

In this case I would recommend, simply, the reinstatement of Babineaux Redain to stand outside Castle Daggerfall after the saving of King Casimir.

(3) STONEFALLS

In the separate story of Stonefalls: You've saved Bal Foyen and been sent here... You've foiled the Covenant invasion at Davons Watch, but only by setting Balreth loose on the land... You've imprisoned him... You've been sent to Vivec's Antlers, and dealt with the theft of the Coral Heart... You've gone to Fort Virak, defeated General Serien. Tanval Indoril steals the Coral Heart and plans to use it... Holgunn talks about Sadal, the *second* Brother of Strife (whom you may have already heard about in a previous sidequest)... And his dialogue, IF you follow it, suggests you go to nearby Kragenmoor to open the way to the Tormented Spire... There is supposed to be a "pointer" quest here, "City at the Spire", obtained immediately by talking to Holgunn, which tells you to go to Kragenmoor and ends when you actually get there...

...BUT this pointer quest does not start if you have already previously discovered the town of Kragenmoor by simply walking into it (or teleporting to a previously-owned Kragenhome to search the area for an antiquity), which there is a very good chance you've done already. So from Fort Virak, if you don't remember the name of Kragenmoor, there's no indication of where to go next.

In this case, I believe it's simply a bug based on conditionals, that prevents "City at the Spire" starting at Fort Virak: and it should be fixed to start automatically once you talk to Holgunn outside Fort Virak after defeating General Serien, regardless of whether you have or have not yet "discovered" Kragenmoor.

Having done more DC characters than any others, I can say that the Giblets quest was the one that stalled me multiple times until I could remember it.

You kind of get used to having the next questgiver appear on the spot when you complete one too, so I think that is the best way. The UESP site has a good listing of the quest lines for all factions if you get stuck, though.

EDIT: plus, having human questgivers is almost universal so making a stray dog as the questgiver for a major faction quest is not expected by the player
