Where do items go that are sold to game trader (not player traders)?

I once played a game where things sold at game traders were 'recycled' so to speak, back into the game via treasure chests and foraging, I guess via RNG.

I'm curious; if I sold a gold item where does it go? Does anyone know?

    As far as I know, the answer is: nowhere. The only purpose of selling items to NPC vendors is to use up some of your gold, which (apparently) helps the in-game gold economy.

    They're deleted. The same thing happens when you use gold to buy things from NPC merchants - the item is created on the spot and the gold is deleted.

    But that helps to balance out items and gold being created when you loot enemies. If you kill a giant and get some potions it's not because they recently killed an NPC who bought them from another player, they were just generated following the loot table.

    The game itself doesn't have an Economy that gives permanence to items. Loot is generated when you find it or buy it, and deleted when either sold or destroyed by you.

    You have it backwards-- selling items to NPC vendors does not use up any of your gold; it adds to your gold. It might not add as much for certain items as you (maybe) could have gotten by selling them through guild traders (if someone buys them for the price you're asking), but you're still gaining gold from the sale, not losing any gold at all.

    There is a buyback tab of your most recently sold 10-15 items, but after that it's the void.

    I assume you'd prefer not to fall prey to misinformation that you read on the forums because no one put the correct information forth?
