So as someone who has not mained a necro, and as someone who isn't gonna surf through all of the posts over the past couple of months about the nerf, can folks explain to me why it's so bad now? One ability got changed from dealing damage to instead being a buff now, right?
Can it not sufficiently tank, heal, or deal damage? Is it not unique? Will scribing not fix a lot of it?
I haven't gotten a necro to level 50 yet, but it seems like it can still do all gameplay and do just fine. I've mained as a non-pet sorc, so I only use a few skills from my class lines. I think I'd really enjoy some of what the necromancer can bring to an ability bar. And with scribing coming up, I feel like the current gaps in all classes will start to smooth over.
I wanna make a necro character as a secondary main, but lately I've been worried it's just a bad idea on my end and that eventually the class would just be a smattering of unusable abilities and zero scaling. But that's just what I fear based on everyone's reactions to the change. So are things really that bad, getting that bad, or is it still functional?

Everything you want to do on a Necro you can do much better and easier on another class. That's the short and sweet of it.
