Hey all, sometimes when i am in Group doing dungeons and things Someone will type in Group Chat and it comes up all Asian. Is that in my Settings and I am not translating or is that in their settings?

Thanks! I would like to know how to fix this if it is on my end so i can communicate better.

i dont think ESO chat has auto-translate, if someone types foreign language in the chat, thats how it will send to everyone

there are no settings for this

Pretty sure "asian" isn't a language, if the group chat is coming up Japanese, Chinese or Korean, then the player is typing in that language. There is no translate feature...

How are we supposed to tell whose language it is if we don't understand what they're saying or can't translate the message?

Asian is a culture which consists of different languages. There are also parts of the world named Asia which means this also designates a region where these languages are spoken.

But really, I think people should speak clearly and be mindful of what zone you're in instead of speaking a language that none of us can understand or again, translate. Its just a courtesy and I'm sure others on their end would expect the same from us.

I'm pretty sure courtesy is something everyone not only appreciates but comes to expect, regardless of who you are or where you live.

Just put them on ignore. Problem solved! You can't understand them anyway, so it will keep the chat from getting cluttered with unreadable text.

If you research the languages of different cultures, then you can recognize what language the different characters come from. Each culture's written characters are quite distinct from one another if you know how to look. That is how you know whose language it is.

You do not have to know what the characters mean order to recognize what culture the characters/symbols come from. Yes, there are similarities, but there are also some very distinct differences.

One can also use the google translate app on their phone, take a picture of the screen where the text is, and the app will do the job of recognizing the language and translating it for you.

There are...so many things being said to break down here, but that would be derailing the thread.

There is not an official language for text chat In game. If someone wants to write in their native language, let them, if you don't also speak it its obviously not meant for you and thus, you can ignore it, even if its being said in Group chat.

If it's pretty common, your active time might also overlap with primetime in certain countries. I've had some players clearly be using some translation software to type in English, which I find kind of fun. Can always send them a smiley face and a hello--means a bit more when that's the only way you can understand each other lol

I mean, OP isn't trying to make people speak English, just to understand them. It would be a good idea for ZOS to implement a translation feature since there's so many languages supported by ESO, but I mean... the profanity filter doesn't do the best job so I don't know how well a translation setting would go down haha. I just avoid the situation entirely by not playing/doing pug groups after like 1am eastern time.
Still can get people who speak non-English languages but during American times they tend to be more bilingual.

I have never understood why they complain (this is not the case of the OP) when someone writes in another language,

I agree that everyone should not be expected to speak the same language, we are not living in the Tower of Babel.
But I do think ZOS could introduce simple phrases like: "Heal me!", "Focus attack!", "Need tank", etc.
This can help people with different languages communicate effectively on various occasions without wasting time using translation software to translate over and over again.

I’m pretty sure that is actually a thing already. I’m not sure if it is the client language or English though. It might be in the emote section of help?

    Okay, woah there.

"North America" does not mean "English Speaking Only"....there are countries in North America whose primary language is not English, and those languages are also frequently spoken on the NA server, as they should be.

No, China, Japan, and Korea are not a part of "NA", but bear in mind that the game has been translated into multiple different languages- specifically Simplified Chinese, and so we have many players who speak Chinese on the NA sever.

I don't see a problem with it. Politely saying that you do not speak their language and cannot understand them is a better way of communicating than blocking them or treating them poorly simply because they tried to speak their own language. (That comment isn't directed at the original poster, by the way, but at some other commenters in the thread.)

In all likelihood, they were asking if anyone in the group spoke their language.

I can't believe we're even having this conversation.

Of course there are always exceptions. But who lives in North America... mostly English speaking people. And yeah in Canada you probably have alot of French as well as Native American (who live in both America and Canada).

But the difference here is we're not talking about those languages, they keep posting messages in like an Asian format which is not predominant in North America.

Like you said, I can't believe we're having this conversation. I agree.

North America doesn't have an official language. It's a continent with a lot of different people. In addition, different players from other regions are expected to connect to the server that works best for them. For some, that means NA.

It's not an English zone. And anyone who is speaking in a language you don't understand isn't talking to you. They are talking to the people that understand them. Just because an English speaker can "overhear it" doesn't mean they are the target audience.

just clarifying here - you understand that the NA server or EU server are not zones, but locations where the servers are hosted? Anyone can access any of those servers and will generally pick the one closest to them for the best ping. There is no criteria that because the NA server is hosted in the US that people must type or chat in English, and for the EU server there is no requirement to type or chat in German

I've always thought of the North American server as the more international one, since I think it's the one the game defaults to if you're anywhere outside Europe, and I think the one that gives a lot of people a better ping (especially in Oceania and Asia). I don't play on it much but I always assumed that means you could encounter pretty much any language in the world and it wouldn't be surprising to see people speaking one you don't understand. (Also because, according to Wikipedia, there are 46 countries in North America, and there will be numerous official languages between them.)

The game officially supports English, French, German, Russian, Simplified Chinese and Spanish, so I'd at least expect to see all of those. On EU I've also frequently seen Dutch, Greek, Italian and Polish, and others more rarely. It's not at all unusual to see someone speaking a language I don't know, I just assume that means their message is not for me.
