Due to some genetic fluke, most hairs of the regular coat covering the hindquarter around the tail have the same colour as the tail hair itself. The steed has a black, salt'n'pepper-y spot around the base of the tail, so to speak.
Sure, it is a certain suspension of disbelief, but if you can ignore the deformed hind legs of ESO horses, this should be doable.
I thought that's what it was lol. I hope when I get mine I can continue to see it that way.

obsessed with horse butts seems to be the main issue here
Well, I could go with that for anything NOT RL based, but horses are right out. If you're going to use horses in a fantasy world, then damn it, get them right! If you can't get them right then make up some "fantasy world" mount, where you can be as sloppy as you want to!

The way I see it is if humans can summon fireballs, and cats can walk around and talk and have a whole civilization, horses can have wonky legs. As long as it doesn't look dumb to me. Although, I suppose how dumb it looks will vary considerably by how trained your eye is. So, I definitely get why others don't feel the same. Especially those that are accustomed to horses! I have almost no experience with horses, so that helps with putting blinders on, so to speak.

Here's a thing.
Look at Agro from Shadow of the Colossus, or Torrent from Elden Ring, or any horse from Oblivion.
You don't have to be a horse person to see that the way they move is believable, graceful - just what you'd expect a horse to feel like from a player's perspective. It's not nearly accurate to IRL horses. But it works so much better than stiff wooden legs eso horses with questionable anatomy.

When I'm riding around Tamriel the back of the horse is what I see. I won't use this mount because of this smear.

Exactly, the ESO horses are horrible, especially when you compare them with the Oblivion horses... I mean, how can they ignore this all the years? And I also don´t get it, they design amazing architecture, amazing landscapes etc. but the horses look like my like my niece painted it in elementary school.
Oblivion horse vs. ESO horse...

Nyan Cat is an very old Internet meme. One of the OGs.
