I'm a little worried about the value of this item on the live server

A friend of mine sent me this screenshot, he looked very confusing. Does anyone know what is happening, for the value of CHARCOAL to be so high?

Is this some kind of joke? Or are there people trying to "clean" the PTS gold? If this is indeed the case, I hope Zenimax does something about it!

This item, as far as I know, is literally trash... it serves absolutely no purpose to sell or to buy

There are often such outliers, sometimes a common provisioning item listed ridiculously high. TTC is a guide to what people list at only and so can give you an idea of the value, but is far from a complete picture (other add-ons will track what items sell at, but only from guilds you’re in).

As to why, it could be gold laundering. In some cases it could be an attempt to alter the average value, but trash items aren’t generally listed for sale. Otherwise, an expensive joke? I’m out of ideas.

Hard to tell, the prices on PC EU is under a 100 gold and vastly different from the prices from PC NA.

An important thing to remember with Tamriel Trade Center is it doesn't show you what an item is worth, it shows you an average of what players are trying to sell it for. There's always a few players trying to sell things for far, far more than they're worth. My guess is with junk items it's only those players who try to sell them so there aren't any sensible listings to bring the average down.

But I don't think we can know why they've done it without asking them. The TTC website gives a bit more info, but even then it's just speculation. The top 3 listings are all from the same player, selling 3 charcoal for 1 million gold each. That could be money laundering of some sort (but not necessarily PTS bug gold) or it could be some other sort of scam. One of my guilds once ran a competition to be the top trader of the week and had to cancel it because people were cheating by selling massively over-priced items to their own alt accounts.

Maybe you could report it to ZOS (you'd have to use a support ticket, I don't think you can report guild trader sales via the in-game menu), I'm not sure what they could do, but they could at least see what happens with the sales and if it's suspicious.

Whatever the reasons for listing it at ridiculous prices there are s number of them still for sale, some posted 1 hour ago. And it's not just a TTC screwup, the ones I checked are actually listed on traders as I write this.

    It's pretty weird.

Important thing to note is, that's not the value of charcoal at all - what TTC is showing you is just based on what people have listed charcoal at. It doesn't indicate that anyone has purchased charcoal at that price.

Since charcoal only has 12 listings on the entire server (in the screenshot provided)... and is a trash item that most normal players wouldn't be attempting to list... it would be exceedingly easy for one player to manipulate the TTC price. I won't speculate on the reasons why though.

I just think it's bizarre that someone would actually list a trash item for sale. Charcoal doesn't have any collector's / rarity value, as far as I know.

Kind of hard to tell, but there are only nine Charcoal listings on TTC for PC NA (three are from the same user), and they're all wildly inflated. Whatever the reason is, the user figured that listing it was worth the 1% listing fee. Even assuming that they confused it for Charcoal of Remorse (style mat for Xyvkin), which does get traded, it's still wildly inflated. Looking back at TTC sales data, no one has bought it (zero sales in the past year) and the inflated listings are all within the past couple of weeks, so I'd guess that a few users got pranked by someone and will eat the listing fee.

EDIT: In light of the comment from @CrashTest regarding internal sales for guild-support purposes (makes the sales quota and sends 3.5% to the guild, but still loses 4.5% to ZOS' gold-sink), it does make me wonder whether TTC's data on actual sales depends upon the buyer having TTC running at the time of purchase. The idea being that "zero sales" from my original comment depends upon TTC knowing of the sale in the first place and there are various ways of keeping that data out of the stream (for nefarious purposes or not).

This has been a thing for years and not just with charcoal but random worthless stuff. Sometimes it's actual valuable stuff that's severely overpriced.

It's not always nefarious. People do it because they fat fingered their input, trolling,, it's meant for internal guild buying to support the guild, etc.

Personally, I've done it because I was in a rush to fill out my remaining guild trader slots bc I had to logoff. I'm always surprised when someone actually buys my overpriced stuff lol.

I wonder if someone's trying to pull wool by listing as if this was "Charcoal of Remorse".

It's very simple. Either it's artificially inflated prices through fake lots, or it's transferring money from one account to another using an auction, if there are any sales.

Even for Charcoal of Remorse, the 1 million listing is about 999.950 gm too high, it's not that.

It could be gold laundering. It could be a prank. It could be some weird guild thing. My bet would be on gold laundering. 🃏
