haven't seen anything recently so here is my experience today:
Bought 85 crates for 1100 gems to get the two mounts on discount. I extracted everything including furniture that some might prefer to keep. A few crates contain 5 rewards instead of 4. At least 2 rewards just gave lots of gems directly. I didn't get any apex reward.
The initial crates are likely to result in less gems, because they contain new costumes, pets, etc, that you haven't collected yet. Without any large rewards, the last 15 crates of mine still resulted in more than 150 gems, as the rate became more predictable the more of the same crate I bought.
So, in order maximize gems, it looks like the best way is to keep buying the same crate you already have, not any others.
After owning nearly all non-apex collectibles, the rate became better and better - the last 90 crates yielded about 1500 gems (= 250 per 15 crates), and the previous batch 60 crates for 700 gems (= 175 per crates). In the last batch also got 1 apex mount and 1 apex skin, which cannot be extracted.
So basically, unless some good luck happens (300 gem from a daily crate), 250 gems per 15 crates is probably the limit. Meaning to get 2500 gems you'd need to acquire at least 10 * 15 crates, and the cost could easily be double that.
Now it's a good time as the crates are on sale, though crowns are not. Next time I'll buy crowns when discounted and keep them until crates are on sale, or just save endeavors, since all radiant apex mounts only cost 16k endeavors.
