Most games that sell well do not see a 33% drop in price 5 weeks after release. Amazon is stuck with so many unsold copies they had to drop the price drastically.

As someone who doesn't like the vast majority of ESO, a sale means nothing.... I pray, even as someone who doesn't plan to sub anytime soon, that this game never goes F2P.

I bought an imperial edition @ $60 on GMG 3 months ago. It will really go to f2p because I was able to buy it @$60 when it should have been $80. /sarcasm.

I got my digital Imp edition for 64 bucks from gamefly, missed the 60 dollar deal from GMG. At the time I thought that pre-sales had just been a little slow, so they wanted to boost them some, then I started playing during early access and discovered that actually the game was a buggy, badly designed mess and they were just making a cash grab for as much as they could get before the word got out. I just hope that the executives and devs responsible for this mess get punished with a long stint of unemployment, but sadly this is the internet age where incompetence and losing money is rewarded. Oh well.

I would hope the game don't go free to play also to put you straight the eu will stop this wording free to play . if you pay a one off fee then its free to pay .
but if micro transactions then the game is not free to pay so most of the games free to pay are not free to pay. that's just to set you straight not many people know that .
most will want the subs like me and the better reason for subs is micro transactions can cost you wads , I list a great example world of tanks 24+ premium tanks that's a lot of real cash . so also you forget all shops online have sales targets to meet so they have to have special offers on to tempt you.

Why are they so many people advocating f2p?
Is it the entitlement generation that are mad that it actually costs money and their parents don't want to cover the fee?

because aside from only a few exceptions f2p (with microtransactions) is the only bussiness model that works for an mmo currently

Remember too its only the standard edition BOX on sale. The digital versions are NOT on sale. Think about it why pay shipping on a game when you can get it digitally. Those boxes after launch are not selling. So relax its just clearing some inventory.

This is standard, the default store seldom has sales, you can get the box far cheaper. Lazy people buy from the digital store, if you want to save you get an box from a retail store.
This is true for most steam games.

I spent $40 on lunch today. Silly cheap kids, I would complain too if I had to beg my parents for money to buy the game. Really If you think $100 is a lot of money... Wait until real life. The rates asked for by these companies are just fine for all the hard work they have put into the game that you spend hours of your life wasting for fun and entertainment.

I would disagree. Subscription models offer far more value in terms of money paid

that may be true, but the problem is that subscription type games don't last long; I don't mind paying a monthly fee, but the problem is that loads of ppl DO mind paying a monthly subscription. look at what happened to the old republic; at the end of it's sub days it was a veritable ghosttown.

I actually kept being a subscriber to swtor even after it went f2p; however I can't deny that going f2p was probably the only thing that saved the game from ending up as a complete failure.

An F2P game bring in $3 player/ month in average and we here count active players so you need 4-5 times as many players to make as much money, good luck finding the 5x as many players.

Two other good reasons to go F2P, one is to fill out empty servers, empty server get players to quit. The other is demands from publisher and people searching for an solution who might work.

For players an F2P game can easy end up more expensive than a sub unless you both play causal and keep the credit card away.

p2p is one of the reasons i was interested in this game in the first place

f2p games are unbearable both for p2w and community
if you think its bad now, it would get 1000x worse if it was f2p

The reason so many games have gone f2p is two fold. One is most people are not going to pay a sub while waiting 6 months or more after release for game devs to fix the buggy crap they have been releasing over the past few years. There are just too many similar games to choose from out there to suffer through a 6 month paid beta. This wasn't the case when WoW was released. There was very little MMO competition at that time.
Two is, f2p is the only way to keep interest and thus player numbers up enough so that when the game is finally no longer a buggy mess, investors can hope to get a return on their investment. Most devs probably do not want to go the f2p route but they are not in charge. The money people are in charge and what they say goes.

The video game industry is a hell of a mess right now. Almost every major game released in the past few years has been a buggy mess upon release, often taking months and several patches to clean up. Many players are getting tired of this cycle and it is hard for investors to justify putting up money upwards of 200 or 300 million dollars for a major game. It is becoming more of a gamble than Hollywood. We may well be entering the era of most gaming becoming like angry birds and farmville. I shudder at the thought but I'm afraid that is where we are heading.
