It doesn't say "patch maintenance," so one would assume it's what they like to refer to as "backend" work.

My money says it will be longer than 8 hours. They have been significantly underestimating the actual length of downtime lately.

Well, looks like it clued up early this time. :)

Hi All, today's maintenance is to reboot the game servers after we come back from break. We do this kind of update annually after the studio comes back from the holiday break.

So effect ‘Turn the servers off and back on again’

Though all joking aside, it’s needed to free up the memory and remove built up temporary files…

Don't the servers effectively get rebooted every time there is a patch or hardware maintenance that requires the game to be shut down for hours?

    Apparently not.

I have no idea what's going on, but i hope they are going to add more server hardware, more cables for a better internet connection and a cold fusion reactor for unlimited power, so we can all have the server resources we need. And maybe next time they can call pest control to get rid of all the nasty bugs.

It is more likely they are cleaning out the hamster cage and oiling the wheel.

It is very possible the software service we call ESO is taken down during normal patching but the physical hardware itself stays up and running. Like when you are installing the latest patch of client-side ESO on your computer afterwards, you can't play ESO, but your computer is still up and running while this happens, and you don't have to reboot your computer after ESO finishes updating.

Yeah, based on the performance degradation in Cyrodiil these last couple nights these kinds of regular reboots are desperately needed to keep the game running properly.

Does this mean they only turn the servers off and on again once a year?

Reboot does not mean turn on and off.

Even if ESO is not online, the server hardware could have near 100% up time.
