I am fully researched on all crafting skills. Are the skill points that reduce research time necessary for master writ drop chance, or anything else other than their respective reductions?
I feel like these are a waste of skill points once one is fully researched, but not sure if there is some hidden business going on behind the scenes.

No they are not. The only skill required for master writ drops is that you do the daily writs at maximum level.
