Why is weather done clientside?

Rosanna_Foxfire
It's kinda bugging me a bit, that I can have it pouring rain in my instance of the game. But I can look over and see my girlfriend's game has it shining and sunny. So, why was Weather done clientside?

Just a theory, but they probably coded it that way due to phaseing. Sometimes specific weather effects are required for the atmosphere of a specific phase. So they probably built the weather from the bottom up with that in mind.

But I do agree it's weird to have two people in the same phase seeing different weather if that's happening.

So I'm not the only one to see this! I turned in a /bug on it when I saw this while playing in group with my wife. I didn't realize it was client side, should have thought about that.

Probably to keep strain off of the megaserver. Imagine the lag if it was doling out weather effects (Look at lotro to see how crappy it runs in a storm)

We were waiting at a WW spawn point and someone asked about the moon cause they couldn't see it because it was cloudy while for other players it was a clear night.

Because it is, my wife will have different weather than I, in the same phase area.

Me and my girl were laughing about this a couple nights ago. I told her its because she is a vampire and only darkclouds and rain follow her, while i get sunny blue skies because im a god fearing templar.

can i ask... you said your girl and your account is Rosanna.. F-F?

Grr. This does not mean that the weather is decided on the client side.

I thought that there was something interesting here that I missed.

I think they've done it character based because of how much is actually going on in the zones. Having a weather system that's zone based rather than character based might have been a bad idea taking into consideration all the layers that each zone is composed of, since when you've progressed through a quest area the area changes most of the time. And that means that you have to program the same cycle of weather in each of the layers rather than having a point-trigger weather effect that reads the weather you leave behind and the weather you'll create in the new zone when you complete a quest.

It can break some of the immersion if you're in the same room, but honestly I don't see this as such a big deal. But I guess that being ESO, it has to be increased 10 fold on the bashing meter ;)

I believe weather is a random function not controlled by the server. Btw, LotRO has the same "feature".

Of course it could be better than all in the server can hear the thunders and see the lightnings at the same time. Let's be optimistic, devs still have 6 years to solve it in this decade.

Bugs the crap out of me when my gf is playing next to me and I can see the unsynced weather.

I wish it was synced up so we could enjoy the neat weather effects together.

The server doesn't need to broadcast the location of every raindrop in the zone. A simple value stating which of the several weather options is currently active is all that's required. I'd be surprised if this isn't the way it's done, provided players are in the same phase and that everything is working properly.
