force lock always seems to be significantly worse on simple locks lol

and if it makes you feel better, my record fails was 13x in a row before succeeding on the 14th

i have my main house (grand topal hideaway) listed in the housing tours, it has multiple target dummies, scribing altar, and grandmaster stations (fully filled out with current game), as well as almost every antiquity furnishing on display to preview them

in progress: acquiring mundus stones (currently only have the thief)

sometimes its faster to just manually pick it than failing to force it more than 3-4 times lol

the other day i had an intermediate chest fail 5 times in a row

i think for most chests ill usually just pick them, but when im on my thief toon and im stealing large quantities of lockboxes ill just force them

the problem i have with forcing them is it eats lockpicks, its instantly -1 lockpick each force, regardless of success or fail, and each repeated fail means that chest is just eating more picks

where as normal picking i can sometimes go 5+ chests without a pick breaking

When oakensoul first got released I got my murkmire strongbox lead from a box that I didn't even click first. It was a master... Someone else got it first, tried to force and instantly failed, I got it picked it manually and got the lead.

I've never tried to force a lock since.

This has been brought up several times in the past, and you're probably just the latest victim of terrible RNG. With "Millions of active players" someone's going to be on the bottom end of the curve.

You and me both. I don't force locks. As with everything else in this game (or any other....) I'm not in a hurry.

I suspect that force lock chance works in inverse to the lock level. Master opens on first try, simple takes 5 tries.

It was a few years before I started putting points into and using the Forced Lock skill, but now that I have,
    I wouldn't go back.

And yeah, it is frustrating to get several fails in a row (my record is six, also on Simple Chests), but it doesn't happen every day.

I failed 7 pickpocket attempts with 95% in a row one day, sometimes everything is just against you.

I also never bashed chests in games where that was possible. Lockpicking is the only "thiefly" skill I use....

I pick the locks of all treasure chests manually - even master ones. I wasn't even aware of bashing locks.

I failed the "trivial" lock twice in the Coldharbour prison with a fully levelled and pointed lockpick skill.

I've also failed to pickpocket when it's saying I have 100% chance. That happens often enough to make me contemplate my life choices.

This indicates that force lock don't uses the lock don't uses the chest difficulty as chance factor at all.
An 100% chance lock should never fail.

always been deeply suspicious about the rng especially on 85% chance for simple chests.

did my own test once - noted down fails on 500 simple chests over 3 months and the success rate came out at 77%.

and even at 77% its shouldn't be possible to cop 3, 4, or 5 consecutive fails.

I think the whole passive is weird. Why isn't there a passive that actually makes picking locks easier? Like making the timer go slower or something?
And why do all locks have the same amount of tumblers? Why not have simple locks have two or three tumblers and add one for every difficulty step up? Feels like there is so little thought put into thw whole thing.

There was a thread a while back with someone logging a huge number of chest opening attempts and reporting that the game's success percentages seemed to be lower than the actual percentages, ie., although the game gave an 80% chance to open the chest successfully by forcing it, they found it was actually much lower, closer to 60%, iirc. I don't have any data, but anecdotally I can say that when I fail to pick a lock and immediately force it again, I usually get a number of successive misses, so I think there might be an added layer of conditions whereby when you fail you are more likely to fail again if you try right away. It could be just my impression but it happens consistently enough, so I wonder if besides the percentages being wonky there's also something about failing and the time you have to wait to do another attempt affecting whether you will fail again, regardless of the percentage.

      I never force locks either.

But I have found that the game sometimes places a "tax" on lock picks.

On most simple locks I pick there will be one tumbler that just refuses to fix in place. No matter what I try, how many goes I have (and I can have quite a few, there's no time pressure on a simple lock). And then, seemingly for no reason, the pick breaks. As soon as that happens it's bang, bang, bang, open sesame! as each tumbler falls into place.

All other locks... easy. Simple locks? They extract this tax.
