Is there a technological reason for why companions cannot wear helmets?

I just wanna put the Zombie skin on them and turn them into my Necro's undead thralls.

But then you'd be having fun, and we can't have that!

Given that it's really hard to find even a *remotely* attractive piece of headgear, I don't want them on my own characters, never mind the companions.
    Favourite NPC: Wine-For-All
Mostly PC-EU , with a lonely little guy on NA.

I think enabling them to wear helmets would be a bad decision, would be harder to tell at a glance who's a player and who's a companion. as it is now is fine, yes many people have the same companion but as more expansions come out and people use the outfits/motifs available to them their compnaions can still become plenty unique, I've never seen anyone else's Ember look like mine for instance, and being able to see their face makes it a better connection roleplay wise when you're talking to your companion and so on.

I have to agree. A few months ago I was very much "yeah, would be nice to have hats/helms, I can't see why not" and...then I started farming the Galen vents. Trying to work out who's a player and who's a companion is hard enough when there's a sea of people swarming an event. Right now, the lack of helmet helps you see it's a companion character. I understand it's a sticking point for a good few in the community but these days I can't find it in myself to protest to the decision. Would it be nice to be able to finish off a great outfit with a great head-piece - yes, do I find it super annoying - no.

I don't find this at all difficult honestly. Its easy to tell due to the way the companions move, and the fact that when my camera passes over them, the nameplate underneath my compass says "so-and-so's companion". Helmets wouldn't change this for me.

I'm probably going to be the sole dissenter here but I actually like the no helmet look. If I was ZOS I would allow for customizing hairstyles. I do agree that five Isobels around a dolmen is a little creepy.

I'm fine with other folks having the option to put helmets on their companions. As long as there is an option for hide helmet on my companions.

Every one of my alts has hide helmet and hide shoulder enabled. I'm not a big fan of helmets.

And why exactly does it matter if you couldn't tell them apart? How does that influence your gameplay?

So when you see an NPC walking around you think it’s a player?? All you have to do is target them. Also, who cares 🤣? Makes it look more alive anyways. All you have to do to deduce if it’s a player or companion is see who is following who lol.

Yea it’s more about choice than anything. I think having the choice to hide it for people that want it is a bonus. If you want to not wear a helmet, then don’t. But this is no way causes any disadvantage or anything for players - at least not one that I can think of.

It is useful to know who to target for healing, rezzing, etc and to have an idea who is a real human or not when you're in a group event type situation. Companions are good but they're not a player and it is useful in a franetic situation to know at a glance who's a player and who's not. Seeing a known companion character's face is a lot quicker than searching for a name-plate or observing their behavior. It's not a massive issue but it is useful to know. I imagine it's probably that sort of situation the devs had in mind when making the decision.

I like creating outfits for my companion, don't get me wrong, but right now, considering there is confirmation that the lack of headgear was a decision and not an oversight, it's not really a hill I personally want to die on. If other's want to push for it, by all means, but the recent Q&A seemed to suggest it was something they weren't keen on changing.
