Can other players open someone else's Chest from a Map?

It is impossible for another player to see your 'Treasure Map' chest. They cannot see it, they cannot interact with it, period. However, since all the Treasure Map locations are fixed it is not at all uncommon to have multiple people digging the same map in the same location. This can give the appearance that someone is interacting with 'your' chest, when they are not.

The chest is only able to be opened by you. I have paid attention to other players running around near my treasure or survey spot, when I am having trouble locating it. I wear glasses and have a pretty strong prescription, so sometimes I don't see the mound right away but know I'm in the right general location. Seeing another player pause in front of a spot near me sometimes also makes it easier to see the mound.

But I am only seeing my own mound, not theirs, because it's instanced to the player like surveys.

Player digging up a chest look like just standing there and doing nothing to other players. Chest is not visible to other players. If another player digs a chest from their map at same time they have their own chest not visible to you. If you fail to loot the chest for some reason - like inventory blues - it will disappear when you leave the area. One of the situations where merchant or banker assistent is useful.

    Greetings,

This thread has been moved to the Players Helping Players section, as it is better suited there.

    Thank you for your understanding.

I've never heard of other players being able to see your treasure map chests, but I wouldn't be 100% surprised if someone found an exploit that allows this. Players are always finding new ways to break the game.

@Elvenheart and I just conducted some experiments and this is what we found out.
    • I had a map and he could not see the dirt mound.
    • I dug up the dirt and he could not see the chest.
    • I took one item from the chest and walked away and he still could not see the chest.
    • We were not grouped for this.

So then we tried a different way. We both got the same exact map and went to the spot. We were not initially grouped for this.
    • We could both see the dirt mound.
    • I dug my chest and he still just saw the dirt mound.
    • I took one item out and walked away and he still could not see my chest.
    • He dug up the dirt and saw his chest.
    • He took one item out and we then grouped up.
    • Even grouped we only saw our items in our chests when we opened them.

So everyone is correct that no matter what the situation only the person with the map can see the dirt mound or the chest.

It was a fun experiment though. :)

One possibility to explain the situation which inspired this topic is the players were doing what I've sometimes done: they got to the area where the chest is hidden, either using the map or using a website or addon to show the location, but then couldn't spot the dirt mound for some reason. Then when you arrived and dug up the chest they realised that's where it was so they ran over to dig up their own.

How likely that is depends a bit on the map, sometimes the dirt mound is fairly obvious even to me (like if it's on snow), other times it blends in with the actual ground, or it's tucked behind something so if you have the camera on the wrong side you won't see it.

There's been a few times I've been looking for a treasure chest or even a material survey and it's only when someone else runs up and I see where they go that I realise I was almost on top of it and still hadn't seen it.

This could especially happen if they were expecting a chest, not a dirt mount. New players, and the like.

This thread reminded me of something unusual I ran into the other day: a mound of dirt that wasn't associated with a treasure map. I dug it up and there was a chest containing one white quality, "treasure" item worth 50 gold to a npc. Not sure if this is event related or just a random event albeit exceedingly rare.

That's a special thing available during this event.

No. No one can even see your chest from a Treasure Map. Often though players have the same map and are both digging it up. I've seen that many many times. But to answer your question absolutely not. They cannot even see it.
