Really? :D

One of my biggest fears for this game since it released has always been it becoming like WoW with all weird, not exactly lore friendly mounts.

Remember when we just had basic horses like every other Elder Scrolls game. The good old days. Then we got that fiery warhorse, wolves, guars, bears, etc. The beginning of the end.

I'm sure one person rode a bear once upon a time in the lore... Not a whole army though. Guars are fine, I guess. Senches, yeah... But a Vvardvark? Umm, I mean I guess we've not crossed the line too much even though they're usually tiny things but let's not go too crazy and start with the rainbow emitting unicorns, rideable humanoid atronachs or mammoths, please?... :|

And certainly no flying mounts (not that the game could ever achieve that I don't think...)

elder scrolls has a lot of animals that could be ridden and a bigger type of vvardvark existing is really not shocking.

there are a lot of animals people have ridden in our world that aren't mounts in eso. would you also get angry if zos added mammoth mounts? elephants are pretty well known to be ridden.

Sounds like excuses to me and I'm not angry lol but I am shaking my head and sighing very loudly. And yeah, riding elephants in battle was a thing (in RL). Not riding them casually through towns jumping about as would be the case here with mammoth mounts. Where did you see any of these mounts in previous ES games? It's always been just horses. That's always been something I liked about Elder Scrolls. Just enough fantasy but not too much so it becomes generic and too unbelievable. There's already too much that makes the game hard to immerse in I don't think we need anything else that reminds you, 'hey, you're playing a game! But most importantly, an MMO, where you can ride even your frail, old granny into battle!'... :/

Overland difficulty scaling is desperately needed. 9 years. 6 paid expansions. 24 DLCs. 40 game changing updates including One Tamriel, an overhaul of the game including a permanent CP160 gear cap and ridiculous power creep thereafter. I'm sick and tired of hearing about Cadwell Silver & Gold as a "you think you do but you don't" - tier deflection to any criticism regarding the lack of overland difficulty in the game. I'm bored of dungeons, I'm bored of trials; make a personal difficulty slider for overland. It's not that hard.

Still bothers me they add these new animals and weird things as mount, but we still don't have the smaller silt striders, echateres, normal welwas, wamasu, donkeys, and other animals that exist in lore and has been used as mounts. Some we even see domesticated in game.

I mean, Guars are fine... They were in Morrowind mainly as pack mules but I can imagine them being used as mounts by the Dunmer quite easily. Senches would probably be used fairly commonly by the Khajiit. Bears... Maybe by some really strong Orcs or a very, special individual like Queen Ayrenn I guess. I think she rode a bear once.

I suppose many of the current mounts can be explained somehow if you try hard enough or assume that because one person in all of Tamriel's history managed to mount something that now everyone can but personally I just don't like how they are used so commonly but well, there's no avoiding that.

Also since the game takes place in such a turbulent time (including that everything so far has happened in the same year - pure insanity lol) you can just assume that it's just a weird part of ESO history we're experiencing. :s

It's those blasted Daedra meddling I tell ya!

I still think you've got to draw the line somewhere though...

I'm all for mounts and I get that it's an MMO and it's natural to have this level of customisation and to get a little carried away but please, pleaaaaase, by the Eight! No. Giant Chicken. Mounts! :D I know you've got to allow some slack because it's an MMO (they all turn out like that) but I'm sure we can do so while keeping it balanced and at least semi-believable. We haven't crossed the line yet, in my opinion, but I'm just saying. A Welwa would be perfectly acceptable. Then again, many things could be acceptable mounts used by some (one!) legendary hero that was so powerful, he could enslave even a Wamasu. A cool dungeon boss, I guess? But to be used by the masses like a common horse? REEE. I just hope none of this influences ES6 (that's a bigger fear). :#

Serious. I'm a long time horsewoman. I won't use the horses in this game because they're..... just not right. And that's a major understatement.

    Just.... UGH.

Tons of things to be critical of in ESO, especially when it comes to mounts - but you leave my guars alone! Guar mounts have been a thing since Morrowind's concept art.

Would absolutely love a silt strider though - even if it was only one of the smaller ones as a furnishing item (animated of course).

That being said, I think a lot of it is just the nature of MMO's - you see similar things in Fallout 76 with power armor too (although that's not really an MMO, more of a lite version).

Things kinda just get silly and ridiculous. But it can be fun too, I just try not to take MMO's or their lore too seriously when compared to single player titles.

The only Equines I use is the Soulrazer Horse and the Hermitage Servitor.

    Soulrazor Horse:
I use it on my Breton Sorcerer. Because I headcanon that it's like bound or summoned armour, a horse created from her imagination. Except, she is very bad at making and conceptualising things. And that's why it is wonky and chonky and ridiculous. So I find it endearing instead of incorrect.

    Hermitage Servitor:
It is barely a horse. But it's weird proportions serves it's monstrousness well. So I really like it on one of my Arcanists.

I also sometimes use the fungal type horses, but for similar reasons as the Soulrazor Horse. I chalk it up to terrible craftsmanship on account of my character.

The rest of my mounts I embrace all bugs and weird things, since I love Morrowind and it's embrace of weird fiction genre, which I crave more of in the gaming world. This often includes things like Vvardvarks, Nix-Oxen, Kagouti, Strange summoned constructs, Dwarven Spiders etc.

But my most devoted type of mount is Guar. I love Guar so much. Rollie the Guar and Corky are forever inscribed upon my heart.
"Finest pack guar I've ever had the privilege of knowing. He and I have been together for years. Sure, he and I have our arguments, and he sometimes can be a little bit stubborn, but we always seem to be able to work things out."

I & my eso social circle absolutely love the Vvardvark mount & will all be grabbing one upon release. We certainly don’t want to revert to a status of only basic horse mounts.

We also don’t need other players with differing priorities deciding on what we should have access to in the game according to their own personal whims and sensibilities.

This. It's considerably more lore friendly than Dwarven spider mounts. Besides, it was even foreshadowed by the latest lore Q&A. Telvanni can do what they want, but thousands of perfectly functional Dwarven automatons running around in a dozen different colours? Not likely.

This. I have a strong dislike for all the glowy, weird, and/or unheard of things we get as mounts, skins, etc. But this vvardvark one isn't that bad. They are experiments, and with all the guars dunmer have it's not that farfetched some magister would make a larger one and then put a guar's saddle on it. And guars are good and proper lore suiting mounts!

It's better than all the dwemer, quasigriffs, and the majority of radiant apex, apex, and ones like them mounts we get.

Honestly, it might even be better than the things that are supposed to be "horses". I wish we had horses, because most of my characters would ride one, but these supposed ones just look so bad it hurts me when I do.

Still want some of these babies, though. Without making them weird heavyweight lizard/daedra versions or a awful radiant, as they did with welwa

Imagine I'm a quirky Telvanni with the special interest to either shrink or enlarge specimens of Vvardenfell's flora and fauna to repurpose them. One day, I decide on a whim that being able to ride Vvardvarks (plenty of them running around in the wilderness, and they're easy to catch, too) would be amusing somehow. Or maybe I have a son who finds them cute and wants one as a pony. Who would stop me, really?!

Seriously, while it's not the most "natural" choice, I finds normal looking Vvardvarks less awful than all those radiant apex horses, camels, bears, wolves and whatnot with over the top flashy, annoying, migraine-inducing sound and light effects (and they get worse with every new release).
And yeah, riding elephants in battle was a thing (in RL). Not riding them casually through towns jumping about as would be the case here with mammoth mounts.

Not only in battle. Elephants were, and are, still used for many different tasks in some countries. The term usually used for their keepers/trainers/handlers is "mahout". I don't want to start a moral discussion now, just stating the facts.

I mean, I'm just saying that if you look at all the other Elder Scrolls games...

And ESO has the Elder Scrolls name... It should act like it. Be consistent. Not just another MMO. Not just add in anything and everything just because you can, making up some nonsense as to why it exists.

But I get it. It's a shared world for every type of Elder Scrolls fan. We all have different tastes. But that's why it should stay balanced. Not too much whacky stuff but a little bit of slack... Just enough to satisfy. That's mostly the way it is at the moment but seeing this new Vvardvark mount made me think, 'oh no what's next?'

It's about finding a balance between what's cool and fun, and what's believable (not just because you can). So, definitely 100% no riding some kind of humanoid thing like a Giant! Or a Dwarven Centurion, Kwama Warrior, Orgrim, etc.

    No giant mud crabs.

Those are examples of what I would consider to be way over the top - where I would draw the line.

Ok, an upscaled Vvardvark is fine. A Nix-Hound would be okay I suppose. A Vulk'esh...Errr, maybe. A Clannfear. Perhaps.

So there are things which are cool and fun but not over the top and look stupid or no more stupid than what we already have like the Dwarven Spider and Nix-Ox.

I still don't see how mammoths would work and they would look stupid with how fast mounts can go.
Same with the silt strider idea. Even the bears look kind of dumb running at max speed...

From what I've seen; horses, guars, senches and wolves are the most popular.

If you want to ride Thomas the Tank Engine or a netch into battle though, go mod Skyrim!

I don't mind quasigriffs in general - while I think actualy gryphons would be better and make more sense, I also see that being a game mechanics issue... it as wings, why won't it fly, etc. So maybe ZOS just wanted to avoid that and went with the quasigriff instead. My only issue with it is the heavy mount animations are so poorly done, too clunky for my tastes.

Maybe was the side effect of making it big. You try make a large ridable vvardvark, but of some reason every experiment ends up having its eyes on the side of it's head. Oh well, still cute and interesting results.

The more I think about it... Maybe they crossed it with a Welwa, which naturally have 4 eyes. I mean, having 4 eyes surely can be useful!

Next, I'd suggest crossing it with a Prong-Eared Grimalkin, so it will have 4 ears, too:
