Arcanist Resource Cost

If zos allows the arcanist class to use "whichever stat is highest", then i am confused as to why they dont allow this with all classes?

For all we know, they could be testing it out on a new class first, because it would be a sorta-drastic change to the pre-existing ones.

    Greetings,

After further review we have decided to move this thread to a category we think is more appropriate for this topic, as it deals with class mechanics.

    Thank you for your understanding

This is the first time such a thing is in this game, maybe after they gather feedback to arcanist other classes may follow suit

That would mess with resource sustain. Most endgame builds use a mixture of magicka and stamina skills to prevent depleting your main resource too quickly. If you lose control of that, and all your skills use main resource no matter what, it would be problematic. While the change may happen someday, ZOS likely need more time to test and balance. Arcanist was designed from start to be hybrid. Other classes were not.

I do think that it'd be nice if the cost of all class spammables would be based on the highest resource.

A Stamblade could then just use Conceiled Weapon without having to slot another spammable, a solo Stamplar could make use of Puncturing Sweep, a DK's whip would just cost Magicka or Stamina and so forth.

It is horrible. The benefit of hybridization is that you can alternate mag/stam skill and have higher total resources and higher effective regen. If skills use the highest pool, you are stuck back in 2014 stacking into one resource.

Yep that was my gut reaction too. Specifically I didn't want the first skill from the healing skill line to cost stamina on my solo / PvP stamina arcanist nor on my potential arcanist tank. Block-casting a self-heal is a thing. You don't want to use the resource you're blocking with for that. Yes, there are exceptions. I like Stormweaver on one of my magblades, for example, but that is a rather special case. In short, if I wanted a stam heal on a stam arcanist, I'd slot Vigor. The class nudges you towards the tanking skill line for magicka self heals, and towards shielding instead of healing. There is also one skill that selects your lower resource. Go figure.

Automatic higher resource selection is no silver bullet. I think it's a questionable experiment. It certainly confused me. My first instinct was to slot the self-heal from the healing skill line on a potential tank build. Nope. Can't do that. You need stam > mag for synergies on a tank, so you end up with a stam heal. Instead of providing build flexibility - play as you want - what dynamic resource selection actually does is shoehorn tanks into the designated shielding and healing skills from the tanking skill line.

Skills only working in the context they were intended for is nothing new. It's the same when skills cost guaranteed stamina or magicka. It's just that dynamic resource selection doesn't change that. At the very least I think making class heals use stamina was a mistake. It may work for spammables, but that's about the only type of skill I might agree with. I'm honestly not even sure about that. For example I've been experimenting with a magblade that has high mag regen and a high stamina pool instead of magicka. This was mainly to turn my Bosmer into a magblade, but having more dodge rolls available before going into cloak on a PvP magblade has it's merits. Dynamic resource selection would kill the point of that build. It's just not a clear win in my book, even for spammables.

PC NA: Magblade (PvP and PvE every role)

ZOS said they intended Arcanist to be 'different' and it is in many ways. It is the first class that I can run full Stamina, run a staff, and have a mix of Light/Medium armor and not have sustain problems as they have several class skills that offer resource return. So I can have my high crit, high pen and improved crit damage unlike in other classes that pretty much require the standard "all magicka, all light armor" or "all stamina, all medium armor" builds to be successful.

This is not an issue at all. Because this situation can be hadled with destrostaff skill on stam DDs and stam weapon skills on mag DDs.
