ESO Plus Sub Changes

Apparently the other thread was removed within the 15 or so minutes it took me to find it, read it, do research & then log in so I could offer a response.

If you are ESO+ and you got an email advising you that your recurring sub will now ONLY recur as a 30 day, it is an over-reaction on Bethesda's part, as well as what may be a misunderstanding of the new law in California (because OF COURSE California, our legislators believe that they must micromanage every single molecule of the residents' lives). Here is a link to a simple explanation of this law: https://www.dglaw.com/californias-amended-automatic-renewal-law-takes-effect-july-1-2022-what-subscription-based-companies-need-to-know/ As I said, it appears that either ZoS/Bethesda misunderstood what they needed to do or simply decided that they won't offer long-term subs anymore & have yet to update their sub page to reflect that.

As I'm not really certain myself of how it will all end up working, I have cancelled my sub and will endeavor to renew it as a 1 year sub after my current time expires. Another person tried to set up a new sub BEFORE their time expired and was only given 30 days. If this happens to me, I may just quit playing altogether. I do an annual sub FOR REASONS, one of which is the savings and another of which is "set it and forget it". Nothing in the new legislation says companies cannot offer sub options that are more than 30 days, just that they must give notice before the sub is to renew (something they should already have been doing anyway). Hopefully this helps other confused folks and I will tag Gina with a request to have this looked at again by their team; there is literally NO reason for them to have stopped offering annual subs (or 3/6 month subs) and no other game company I have a sub with has done that.

@ZOS_GinaBruno , @ZOS_JessicaFolsom Please share the link with the team & request that our long-term subs be re-enabled for those living in California. I try not to speak for others, but I'm pretty sure that those of us living here don't want to have to cancel our subs anymore than ZoS/Bethesda wants to lose the money.

The changes described in that article sound like good ways to prevent people from being charged for ESO subscriptions that they aren't using. Consumers certainly aren't doing our part to advocate for that.

Hopefully they change the terminology because "canceling your ESO+ subscription" sounds like losing ESO+ time, which isn't what happens at all. I always cancel mine immediately after paying.

I'm having a similar issue. I had a yearly(12 months) subscription until it was accidentally canceled so I only had it for 3 months. When I tried to renew it, it was charging me full price like if I never had a subscription before. I was like "this is odd" because usually when the subscription is canceled before 12 months, then renewing it there wouldn't be a charge.

I did submit a ticket to customer support about this issue. They were like "this should not be happening" so they forwarded my ticket to a specialist.

This is what the email actually says,

"Your current 365 Day Membership will expire on 2023. 05. 15., and it will renew as a 30 Day Membership with $14.99/30-days price, due to subscription renewal restrictions in your area.If you'd rather choose to have a different membership plan, please, visit the Manage Membership page on our account site to change your membership plan."

Then when you go to the management page, each option (other than $14.99/mo) states:

"After expiration it will renew as a 30 Day Membership with price of $14.99/30 days."

(However, as I mentioned above, another poster mentioned that they tried to choose a different long-term sub plan & were charged $14.99 & had 30 days added to their sub. That poster also stated that their current sub had not yet expired, so that may be the reason & that is why I both canceled my sub & am waiting until the day after it runs out to try resubbing for a year again.)

So basically, Californians are being punished for their legislature passing a law requiring all companies offering long-term subscriptions to their customers, to remind said customers of the renewal date & amount. Something which, as I mentioned above, is what said companies should ALREADY have been doing.

Now, if ZoS/Bethesda wants to offer me a rate of $11.50/mo (the monthly price under the annual sub plan), I'll go ahead & let it auto-renew monthly.

Hmmm, I wonder if I should put in a ticket as well @Wilykcat. I think I will wait until after I try to renew my sub on the 16th, IF it forces me to choose only the monthly option.

I noticed this issue last year when my year subscription renewed at the monthly rate. The only solution I've come up with is now I renew for the term I want (3, 6 or 12 months) and then immediately cancel my subscription afterwards, so that it will not automatically renew at the monthly rate and my ESO+ just lapses instead. The only upside is now I have to consciously choose my renewal term depending on how I feel about the game at the time.

Yesss don't let companies take away the decision factor by adding convenience lol. Just my two cents! (Or, 3 cents on a monthly schedule)

Interesting, mine did renew for the full year last year. I guess I will just do what you've been doing, since it does apparently allow us to reup for the longer term if we cancel right after confirming the new sub? Thank you for posting that in more detail!

California resident as well. Beta player, subbing since it all began. Being forced to pay the 30 day price because of misinterpretation of the law is ridiculous. I literally cannot renew for extended intervals. I have tried to do this manually and I just keep getting emails saying it will lapse in 30, even when I chose something longer. This needs attention. You do not have to renew an online sub every 30 days, that is not how the law works. If this isn't resolved, I am categorically done with this game as I am not in the habit of allowing companies to price gouge me.
