Activity in ESO or Discord

The thing is, ESO does not provide the in-game tools you'd need to organise and coordinate events, so if you're running regular vet trials, you want something like the text channels of Discord to organise it, post your roster, advertise if you're missing some people. Then, because historically on PC, there's always been a third party voice app like Vent or Teamspeak to use for voice chat, it's quite understandable that there is no built-in voice chat system in ESO. What would be the point, it would not be as feature-rich as any of the third party systems?

The console players are stuck with poor in-game voice chat because until recently, services like Discord were not available on console. I would hate it if they added in-game voice chat to PC and defaulted it to be always on, since I do not want to hear someone else's taste in music, someone else's argument with their parents, and someone else's thoughts e.g. in overland zone chat, where no one needs a group for anything because it's all so ridiculously easy anyway.

Same. I don't do PvP either, or guild stuff. The game is still alive and kicking for me.

i think you all misunderstand what i try to ask\say.
    For exemple vKA trial:
    • If i try for exemple, host a vKA trial. Yes, we can find it in craglorn... If there's tanks online or healers... and shout for 5~ 40minutes+++)
    • If i try to call people from my guilds to join... well.... maybe someone will go, maybe not. Infact, i don't have that luck.
    • If i try to call people for some challenger achiev, maybe, i can find them.... maybe yes.... most of the times, not so lucky.
      and etc...
It's not easy find people in game. Most of the times we need to shout for so long, so much time... change map and shout... change map and shout... you got it!

Now, lets repeat all of this in discord:
    • Create roost in discord
    • people join with all roles
    • Make group, teleport, Trial start... trial done
    • all in 20 minutes.
    • Repeat until roost leader get tired.

What i try to say was: It's 100% better, easy and fast find people to play the game in discord then ingame. Why?
Why can't developers make something ingame to find people in some easy way!? i dont know, but something like a global shout maybe?!

    The point for me is:
    1. inside game (easy to take 35minutes++++ until you have full group)
    2. ouside game (hard to take longer then 5 minutes to find people)

Discord does two things for the most part: it expands your guild chat to those offline and it gives an easy system for voice coms.

A guild is really what you need for most of the things on your wish list, but discord makes your guild better. A vet trial pickup run from Zone Chat is doomed for failure. Vet dungeons are doable in groupfinder, but a few guildmates will always be a better time. A trifecta is going to take a team of 12-14 people that are committed to showing up 2-3 times a week for a long time. Hard to do that with zone chat, and nobody is doing that without voice coms.

In my early days of score pushing and trial HMs, we used Guild chat and Teamspeak and a few guilds actually had chat boards online (that nobody checked). Discord is better, much better.

The alternative to discord is guilds (limited to online players) and then requiring ZOS to implement solid in game voice chat (not holding my breath). I don't see the issue with discord, it solves both the problems and works really really well. You can sign up with a video game handle and a junk email account. If someone isnt willing to do that for the good of their group, I certainly dont want them in a trifecta prog. And again, what is the alternative you are proposing?

We used to play just fine with Teamspeak and Vent. Guilds just would have their own websites. If Discord disappeared, I wouldn't shed a tear.

Lol, we were on a lot of the same TS and guild websites 6-7 years ago. Do you really think that is preferable to Discord? Also, good to see you around, Thornos. Been too long.

I never use voice chat, in any game. Never have and good chance I never will.

I grew up typing to communicate in games and won't be changing that habit.

That seems to be a fairly restrictive view point. We have had voice coms in one way or another nearly as long as we have had online gaming. I think I started using voice coms online in like 2001 or 2002 with Counter Strike. You cant play and type at the same time, so voice coms are objectively superior in any type of team based gaming.

Not saying you have to use them, but I also am guessing you arent pushing the hardest content in a group setting either.

I don't remember any voice communication when I started playing Ultima Online in 1997. We had a text chat called ICQ because there was not a good way to communicate in game, but no voice.

We also used IRC (Internet Relay Chat), another text based program that groups could chat in.

Thing is, discord makes communication so much easier, as well as making the experience more... enjoyable, usually.

I used to have Discord when I did trials, I then stopped playing ESO for a long time, but I don´t have Discord atm since I broke my microphone headphones and can´t afford a proper replacement at this time.

I did recently join a guild that does veteran trials though, I told the guild leader I didn´t have any voice chat, and he said it was fine, but I should get it just to listen in during trials.

    And it´s not every guild.

If you have a smart phone you could use the Discord app on there. I've never bought a microphone for the PC because I'd almost never use it, so on the rare occasions I do want voice chat I use the phone app, since that of course has a built in microphone.

I mostly rely on Discord for seeing things like the current endeavors, pledges, luxury furnishings, and golden vendor items. Aside from endeavors, there's no one in-game place that reports that all to me. So in interest of time, I check Discord. I also use it at times for coordinating group activities, especially trials, or getting build feedback. I keep notifications to a minimum to avoid distractions.

That's interesting to me. One of the first things I do when I join a new Discord server is mute all the bot spam, then I never go into those channels again. I suppose it's good to know someone wants it so it's not just there to be annoying.

    Not the same issue.

Don’t know about in-game chat quality nowadays, we use PS group party chat which is way better.

Nope I'm not. I play games to relax and unwind after a long day at work. I'm not competitive or looking for achievements or anything.

No, I don't think there was any common voice chat application in the early years of UO, apart from perhaps MSN Messenger. But certainly by the very early 2000s there were voice chat servers. You could also auto run in UO and point your mouse in the right direction and be able to type at the same time, and still use abilities. And have written chat in UO Automap open and overlayed on the top of UO. But Teamspeak and Vent certainly made it much easier to co-ordinate the slaughter of the blue masses, or defending or attacking a Harrower ;)

I don't need discord for anything, I only have it because other people require that I use it for certain things. Otherwise, the app really has no place in my gaming experience and could happily live without it. I do not enjoy voice chat and never will, as I find it disruptive to my experience of playing and concentrating on the game.

Like others before me have said, I find voice chat really invasive. I've always found it really discomforting when total strangers act like they're entitled to hear your voice or talk at you over a mic. I can understand talking to a group or guild you've been with for a while, but strangers? Nope.

voice chat i think makes sense for coordinating difficult content (such as dungeons or trials), but i dont like "public" voice chats, those are incredibly annoying and i always disable them

i used to use ventrillo/teamspeak when i played city of heroes, and early elder scrolls (2014 era)

i also used skype when i was playing with friends, but skype was way clunkier

ive been pretty happy with discord due to the ease of use

feel free to stop by and use the facilities

The good thing about discord is that you can schedule your trials ahead of time, know whether you have a full group, send out reminders and actually start the run on time. If you tried that in game, you tell your guild you want a run in two days but come the time, people have forgotten, and you spend an hour filling a group.

What I don't like about discord (not being a very sociable person) are the multitude of chats and channels that get added, fashion, housing, builds, funnies, etc. Often the channels you want to track can get buried under all of the rest.

You've answered yourself. Because its already 100% better, easy and fast. You already have all that functionality in Discord. And far more. Why reinvent the wheel? Let Discord do what its already good at, and let ZOS focus on better things.
